Main duties of the jobYou will share clinical duties with the other medical staff (currently 5 Senior house officer equivalents (One CMT, 2 GP trainees, one FY2 and a second junior clinical fellow). The main duties would be to provide inpatient care but there may also be opportunities to participate in outpatient care. Out of hours duties would include evenings and weekends on call for patients under the care of the oncology team, plus participation in the Medicine Hospital at Night rota.
About usOncology and haematology patients are usually accommodated on one of our two specialist wards, Mulbarton and Mattishall, which both have a combination of six-bed bays and en-suite individual rooms. On most days a team of four junior doctors is jointly responsible for the oncology inpatients, of which there are typically around thirty at any one time. The wards are conveniently co-located with the oncology outpatient services including consultant and junior doctor offices.
The acute oncology service is staffed by specialist nurses and doctors with consultant support when necessary. The service is built around proactive reviews of outpatients with complications of cancer and its treatment including neutropenic sepsis, side effects of chemotherapy, ascites, pleural effusions etc. The national RAG telephone triage system is used and prospectively audited. Intravenous fluids and antibiotics are administered and pleural and ascitic drains placed all on an outpatient basis. There are strong links with the palliative care team who review patients as required.
Overnight and at weekends the service is manned by a trained nurse on Mulbarton ward with the support of the on call junior doctor and consultant as necessary.
