Junior Clinical Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics

The Orthopaedics Department are seeking to appoint a Junior ClinicalFellow for a period of 12 months to commence as soon as possible. Following theprevious successful recruitment campaign at Rotherham, we are now looking toprovide an additional job vacancy in the Department of Trauma &Orthopaedics.

The successful candidate will participate in day to day care forelective and trauma inpatients. There will be an opportunity to assist intheatre on a weekly basis along with outpatient clinics. The successfulcandidate will participate in the first on call rota, supported by the ST3+Higher. You will be encouraged and expected to conduct audit projects.Although this post is not formally recognised for Specialist Medical Training,the post holder will be both expected to, and supported in, taking either theMRCS or completing a MCh (Orth) Degree. Active participation in the auditprogramme is mandatory. Participation in the ISCP assessment system isanticipated and fully supported by the Department.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic group of consultantswithin the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department. There are 16 Consultant OrthopaedicSurgeons specialising in a variety of procedures, such as hip, knee, shoulder,elbow and hand surgery and an Orthopaedic Service for children. The departmentis also supported by one Associate Specialist, four Specialty Doctors, two WrightingtonFellows, five higher surgical trainees, GPST Trainee, 4 Junior ClinicalFellows (ST1-2 Level), one Lower Level Trust F2 Doctor and two Foundation Year1 Trainees through Health Education England. The Advanced ClinicalPractitioners also support the SHO tier rota.

The Department has regular teaching sessions and are committed tofurther education to assist with the successful candidates career progression.We have Associate Teaching Hospital status with the University of Sheffield andstrong links with the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Training programme withstrong representation in the Deanery.

Job responsibilities

There are two, adjacent, Orthopaedic wardswith 27 and 33 beds respectively; one ward is for elective surgery and theother for emergency admissions.

Outpatient sessions are conducted in theOrthopaedic/Fracture clinic suite that lies adjacent to the Accident andEmergency and Radiology departments. The department treats musculo-skeletaldisorders and injuries in adults and children of all ages. We provide a traumaservice, after initial assessment and resuscitation in the Accident andEmergency Department, for all patients who have sustained a recent injury.

The department has regular teachingsessions and are committed to further education to assist with your careerprogression. We have associated teaching hospital status with the University ofSheffield and strong links with the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Trainingprogramme since the Education Training Programme Director works here.

In joining this Trauma and OrthopaedicService at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust you will be working withnationally acclaimed training unit which produces and retains some of the besttrained and qualified Surgeons in the country.

Main duties & responsibilities, management of patientson the elective and non-elective orthopaedic wards. This post includes callduties that are supervised by a registrar.

No previous orthopaedic experience is required but would bean advantage. This post is a startingposition in a speciality and the post holder will be supported by the wider team. Previous experience in general medicine wouldalso be an advantage.

Many of our previous appointments have gone on to furthersurgical training, others have used the opportunity to gain experience inmanaging musculoskeletal problems. This post would suit someone at F3 level.

Expected roles includes:

Attending ward rounds

Observing in clinic and theatres

Maintaining relevant clinical documentation

Taking part in the SHO/ANP on call

Liaising with UECC to enable efficient patientflow

General Clinical Governance (in conjunction withConsultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governanceare met)
