GUY'S AND ST. THOMAS' HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Clinical Fellow in Renal and Transplant Surgery

Full Time - 40 hours per week (No Sunday or Night Shifts)

Fixed Term - 6 months with a view to extend

Main duties of the job

This post would suit trainees wishing to pursue a career in surgery or someone weighing up career options. It provides an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in pre/post-operative management of surgical patients on a busy transplant ward and to develop basic general surgical/vascular/urological technical skills. Those wishing to improve their academic portfolio will be supported to do so. The post will incorporate ward and on-call commitments as well as theatre and outpatient commitments. There will be an opportunity to have allocated time (around 25%) for a Quality Improvement project; the post will therefore suit individuals who wish to develop these areas, and will also suit those who wish to work less than full time. The postholder will be supervised by a Transplant Surgery Consultant as well as the Transplant medical team with whom they will be working closely.

About us

The Department of Nephrology and Transplantation at Guy's is one of the largest in the UK, providing kidney care to South East London, neighbouring areas of Kent and the Channel Islands. In addition, we receive a significant number of complex referrals from a much wider geographical area. We provide a comprehensive range of services for this population, from management of mild kidney disease through to acute kidney injury (AKI) and the full range of modalities of renal replacement therapy. We perform almost 300 transplants each year, have the largest living kidney donor programme in the country and are a supra-regional centre for both combined kidney/pancreas and pancreas alone transplantation. We have the country's largest antibody incompatible transplant programme. We performed the first robotic transplants in the UK and have world-class expertise in vascular access and transplant urology.

We offer a full range of peritoneal and haemodialysis therapies both at home and through a network of satellite units. We are nationally recognised for quality of care, innovation in clinical practice and service delivery, and for our close functional and geographical integration with the research programmes of both the MRC Transplantation Centre and the Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre.

Job responsibilities

The post will be comparable to current FY2/FY3/ST1 posts with respect to responsibilities, audit and opportunities for training. This will be adapted to your training level. The Transplant Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust is part of a busy multidisciplinary directorate. This post would suit juniors interested in pursuing a career in any subspecialty of surgery. They should have at least one/two years' basic training and may wish to further their experience before applying for National Training Number (Core Surgical training or Specialist Registrar) posts.

This post has been designed to assist the department in the general provision of transplant surgical services. This position will form part of a team of 3 Trust Surgical Senior House Officers (Junior Clinical Fellows) and 1 CT1/CT2 doctor who work closely with the surgical team but also with medical SHOs and Physician Associates. Registration with the General Medical Council is essential for this post.
