Job description

We are delighted to be able to offer opportunities for highly motivated, ambitious individuals to join our well-integrated team.


This post offers the successful candidate the opportunity to gain skills in all aspects of the management of patients with acute and elective adult neurosurgical conditions. Successful candidates will be expected to assess and manage, with the support of their senior colleagues, patients receiving treatment in the neurosurgical department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Candidates must be able to work as committed multidisciplinary team members and be able to prioritise their workload.


The successful candidate will be expected to attend regular teaching sessions, including journal club, as well as outpatient clinics and theatre sessions. Opportunities also exist for audit and research projects. Candidates will be allocated a Clinical and Educational Supervisor and encouraged to maintain a portfolio appropriate to their career ambitions (e.g. Horus, ISCP).


The post is to provide resident doctor support to the Neurosurgery department. This includes supporting ward duties, managing acute admissions to the wards and through the emergency department, and assisting in operating theatres. Attending out-patient clinics is encouraged.


Managerial responsibilities include:

  1. Attend morning meetings
  2. Attend ward rounds and manage ward patients
  3. Admit patients to wards and through emergency department
  4. Assist in operating theatre
  5. Attend out-patient clinics
  6. Participate on an on-call rota

Administrative tasks include:

  1. Completion of patient records
  2. Prompt discharge documentation
  3. On-call rota management

Research involvement includes:

  1. Involvement in department-based audit and research projects

Teaching responsibilities include:

  1. Involvement in medical student and junior doctor in-house training
