Main duties of the job

Provide full shift cover for the Emergency Department, 7 days per week, supported and supervised by ED registrars who also work a full shift 24 hour pattern 7 days per week. They will be supervised by EM Consultants for 12-14 hours a day on weekdays and 6 -12 hours a day on weekends.

The post holder will join the junior doctor rota and be responsible for seeing and assessing your own patients under the direct supervision of the ED consultants and registrars.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder plays a key role in the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered acute care. The postholder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing initial assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with a wide range of medical and surgical emergencies. The department includes a resuscitation area, majors and minors zones, ambulatory care, and a Clinical Decision Unit. SHOs are expected to manage patients under senior supervision and participate actively in departmental teaching, handovers, and quality improvement initiatives.

Key Duties:

·Assess and manage patients in all areas of the ED, including majors, minors, and resus.

·Perform practical procedures such as cannulation, suturing, and ECG interpretation.

·Work closely with consultants, registrars, nursing staff, and allied health professionals.

·Participate in regular clinical teaching, simulation sessions, and audit activities.

·Contribute to safe handover of care and accurate documentation.

Additional Information:
Charing Cross ED operates 24/7 and is supported by onsite specialties including acute medicine, general surgery, and neurology. The hospital is also a hub for stroke and neurosciences within the Trust. The role provides excellent exposure to a wide case mix and is ideal for trainees preparing for core or specialty training in emergency medicine or internal medicine.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Can demonstrate the skills and knowledge, equivalent to the completion of Foundation level training or equivalent by commencement of post.
  • Have graduated from Medical School in the last 5 years.
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS (or equivalent) within two years of application.
  • Additional related qualifications such as post graduate degree, BSc
  • Demonstrates an understanding and/or knowledge of NHS systems and practices

Academic achievements including research/publications

  • Evidence of academic involvement and achievement, e.g. presentations, publications or post graduate degree.

Clinical Skills

  • Demonstrates ability to carry out clinical skills appropriate to job description.
  • Experience of/aptitude for clinical activity appropriate to the role.
  • At least 12 months’ relevant experience following award of medical qualification.
  • Experience of teaching junior medical colleagues and/or undergraduates.

Audit

  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of clinical audit, clinical quality improvement initiatives and research including an awareness of ethics.
  • Previous experience of involvement in undertaking clinical audit, formal research or clinical quality improvement initiative.

Relevant experience in specialty/Sub specialty

  • Demonstrates an interest in emergency medicine
