Job description

Job summary: Elderly Medicine is seeking a Junior Clinical Fellow for 9 months to cover maternity leave. The post is designed to provide individually tailored experience and training for those who have yet to decide their chosen career pathway, wish to consider some time out of training, or want to develop a special interest in Elderly Medicine.

Main duties of the job: As an Elderly Medicine junior clinical fellow, your role will be in the initial assessment and treatment of elderly patients on the wards. You will have the opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary team, and the clinical experience you gain will be diverse and interesting. Main duties consist of:

  • Ward-based working at minimum ST1/2 level on Elderly Medicine wards covering Monday to Friday 8am until 4:30 pm.
  • Delivering the actions from the consultant-led ward rounds for patients on the wards.
  • Supporting the multidisciplinary team in providing care to patients during their inpatient stay and actively participating in discharge planning.
  • There will be availability/possibility to also participate in departmental teaching/audit sessions and clinics. There is also the possibility to participate in national audits if interested.

Person Specification

Experience: Essential - Previous experience relevant to the specialty, Applicant knowledge is up to date and is fit to practice safely, Commitment for managing professional development, Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk, NHS Experience.

Desirable: Clinical governance/audit experience, Out of hours experience relevant to the job, Experience in the specialty beyond FY3 or equivalent.

Skills: Essential - Practical skills in relation to the specialty, Proven ability to work in different clinical settings, Clear communication skills, Organisation and planning, Empathy and sensitivity, All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Desirable: Interest in teaching and management, Multilingual.

Knowledge: Essential - Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality, Acute care safe - up to date ALS, Relevant specialty clinical knowledge.

Desirable: Specialist Knowledge Exam, ALS Instructors Certificate.

Qualifications: Essential - MBBS or equivalent medical qualification, Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment, Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice, Specialty-specific requirements eg MRCP, FRCS, etc where appropriate.
