Job Introduction

You'll be involved in all aspects of multimedia journalism including script writing, packaging and compiling TV bulletins. You'll be at ease writing sports, business stories, cutting headlines or making Graphics.

You must have plenty of energy, flexibility and enthusiasm and be able to work with people from different backgrounds in a multilingual environment.

Above all, you must be an outstanding TV journalist, and be able to produce accurate, informed and interesting news and programming under tight deadlines and to the highest possible standards. The role also requires first class communication skills and knowledge of World Service Language output, audiences and formats as well as a proven understanding of international, regional and Afghan affairs.

The successful candidate will work in a team led by the Pashto TV editor and senior producers. On a daily basis, you will work closely with online and radio colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

1. Appear on screen as part of a TV piece or presenting part of all of a programme or 1-1 explainer with other presenter.
2. Research, write, transcribe, edit and adapt stories or programme material for Pashto TV audiences
3. Write, cut and produce bulletins content for live broadcast using relevant TV News content production software ie OpenMedia, MozArt, Jupiter/SQ Edit, VizRT, Big Ted etc.
4. Offer ideas for sequences, packages and programme content. Suggest new angles on existing stories and to put forward stories not yet covered.
5. Be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required.
6. Create original material for all multimedia News and non-News output on linear TV and digital/mobile/social platforms.
7. Work with Graphic Designers to produce creative and original graphics sequences that can be shared and picked up by other BBC departments.
8. Build and maintain links with other areas of the BBC including Pashto/Dari radio, Afghan digital output, 24/7 Global and UK, ATV, PTV, and other areas of News to enable the efficient production of content.
9. Take responsibility for thinking through and around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.
10. Maintain professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing and adhering to the BBC's Editorial guidelines.
11. Be responsible for studio production of live and pre-recorded programmes. Respond to breaking stories whilst on air and resolve technical difficulties.
12. Use a range of audio & digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
13. Ensure that BBC Editorial guidelines and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring upwards in cases of difficulty or doubt.
14. All journalists may be required to work with or move to other programme teams such as Pashto radio and or Pashto digital on a multi-media basis and on occasion to provide advice, file pieces or be a live contributor to other BBC outlets.
15. Work the hours required for the business needs.
16. Be responsible for efficient use of allocated resources.

Are you the right Candidate?

1. Proven track record of producing stories, sequences and programmes for TV, and proven editorial judgement.
2. Substantial recent and relevant full-time experience as a journalist, both in originating material and editing the work of others.
3. Ability to write scripts and adapt with accuracy in Pashto language, clarity and style appropriate to audience and forms of media.
4. Complete comprehension of written and spoken Pashto & English and the ability to communicate effectively.
5. A passion for International and Afghan news and a thorough current knowledge and understanding of news and current affairs as well as history, social issues, business arts/culture and sports.
6. A demonstrable interest in working in a multimedia environment and in encouraging audience involvement.
7. A demonstrable interest in digital media and how to exploit it for the BBC's purposes.
8. Knowledge of the latest developments in global digital news broadcasting.
9. Strong communication skills.
10. Good keyboard/computer skills and the ability to acquire technical skills and to operate technical equipment.
11. A thorough knowledge of the aims, objectives and standards of BBC News and the World Service Group.
12. An understanding of the BBC's distinctive news agenda and a wider interest in the strategy of the BBC as a whole.
