The Joined Up Institute offers a year-long leadership development opportunity aimed at emerging leaders within youth-focussed sectors in Leicester. This fully funded program fosters collaboration, leadership skills, and community relationship building among participants, designed for professionals dedicated to improving youth outcomes.
Empowering Emerging Leaders to Transform Youth Services
The Joined Up Institute (JUI) is a pioneering professional development programme that brings together emerging leaders from across Leicester’s youth-facing sectors. Designed to strengthen collaboration and innovation across services that impact young people, the JUI aims to cultivate a new generation of changemakers equipped to drive systemic improvements across education, health, youth work, and community support.
Now accepting applications for its 2025–2026 pilot cohort, this fully funded, year-long initiative will welcome 300 participants into a bold learning and leadership experience. Through in-person sessions, online workshops, and communities of practice, participants will explore new ways of working together to enhance youth outcomes and community well-being.
Young people’s lives are deeply influenced by the systems that surround them—schools, healthcare, youth services, housing, and local government. However, these systems often operate in silos, leaving gaps in care and missed opportunities for collaboration. The Joined Up Institute was created in response to this fragmentation, investing in leaders who can bridge divides, think systemically, and co-create a more joined-up support system for youth in Leicester.
Whether you work directly with young people or play a supporting role behind the scenes, this programme is for professionals and volunteers committed to building a better future for Leicester’s youth.
As a participant in the Joined Up Institute, you will:
Build meaningful relationships across sectors and communities
Discover what’s working in other fields and explore how it can translate to your context
Develop leadership and systems-thinking skills to navigate complexity and lead with purpose
Participate in three in-person learning days, plus regular online learning sessions and peer-learning networks
Be part of a diverse, co-designed cohort experience shaped by local voices and priorities
The programme focuses on real-world problem-solving, collaborative leadership, and personal development. It is grounded in inclusion, systems change, and a shared vision for equity in youth services.
The JUI is designed for:
Emerging leaders working or volunteering in youth-facing sectors (e.g., education, youth work, health, criminal justice, local government, etc.)
Individuals aged 18 and over, based in Leicester, with a commitment to youth development
Applicants who can commit approximately 6 working days over the course of the programme (3 in-person and 3 online)
The programme uses an inclusive definition of leadership. You might be:
A middle leader or well-networked practitioner
A board or advisory group member
A motivated changemaker ready to influence others
A young professional with a clear vision for how you want to shape youth services
Applications will be assessed based on potential rather than traditional credentials. The review team seeks to identify four core leadership qualities , based on Big Change’s dimensions of leadership:
Purpose – values-driven, motivated by lived or learned experience
Growth – self-aware, open to feedback, eager to learn
Agency – committed to making a difference and challenging the status quo
Relationships – collaborative, community-minded, systems-focused
In line with the programme’s inclusion strategy, priority consideration will be given to:
Young applicants aged 18–25
People from Global Majority backgrounds
Applicants with disabilities or long-term health conditions
Applications are open now and will close on Wednesday 16 July 2025.
The application involves four parts:
Personal details and role information
Two written or recorded responses (250 words or 2-minute video/audio per question)
Optional inclusion information (used for access and equity only)
If you need assistance or would like to learn more, you can:
The programme team welcomes requests for reasonable adjustments during both the application and participation phases. Religious observances and accessibility needs will be accommodated.
