Job Purpose
The Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining and improving IT infrastructure, leading the IT Helpdesk, and ensuring effective security monitoring and patch management. The role focuses on security, user support and system reliability while contributing to and promoting best practices in cybersecurity and compliance.
Key Responsibilities include:
IT Infrastructure & System Management
Manage maintenance and health of servers, networks, cloud environments and software to ensure high availability.
Implement automation and monitoring to enhance system performance.
Work closely with MSP to maximise Microsoft 365/Entra security posture.
Oversee purchasing and asset management processes (with Head of IT) and lead on endpoint configuration.
Lead and oversee the IT Helpdesk, ensuring user issues are resolved efficiently.
Ensure KPIs are met in line with departments goals.
Provide 2nd/3rd line IT Support.
Cyber Security Promotion and User training
Actively promote Cyber Security in line with department policies, strategy and risk assessments.
Monitor threat intelligence feeds (EDR software/Defender/3rd party sources) and take appropriate actions.
Oversee and administer attack simulation software.
Assist Head of IT with delivery of user training.
Patch Management & Security Compliance
Manage patch deployment, updates, and vulnerability remediation.
Ensure compliance with ISO 27001 and take on responsibility for Cyber Essentials controls.
Work closely with Head of IT to achieve Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation.
Projects
Work closely with Head of IT and collaborate with IT Projects Coordinator on projects as required in line with business needs and department strategy.
Person Specification
Experience Required:
1. IT Systems Administration (3+ years preferred) – Proven experience managing IT infrastructure, servers, and end-user support in an SME or enterprise environment.
2. Helpdesk Leadership (3+ years preferred) – Experience managing an IT Helpdesk team, handling escalations, and setting IT support workflows.
3. Patch Management – Hands-on experience with OS and software patching (Windows Server, Linux) and using patch deployment tools.
4. Cybersecurity & Compliance – Experience working within ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, NIST frameworks, including vulnerability management, access control, and security auditing.
5. Network Administration – Understanding of networking principles (firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP).
6. Microsoft 365 & Active Directory – Strong expertise in managing Active Directory (Group Policies, permissions, user management), Microsoft 365 administration (Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Intune), and Azure/Entra.
7. Virtualization & Cloud – Experience with VMware, Hyper-V, and Azure/AWS administration.
8. Automation & Scripting – Knowledge of PowerShell, Python, or Bash for automating tasks.
9. Incident Response & Disaster Recovery – Knowledge of backup solutions, disaster recovery planning, and IT continuity.
Qualifications & Certifications (Preferred):
CompTIA Security+ or CySA+ (Cybersecurity emphasis)
£30,000 - £35,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
