Job summary

Oxford Population Health (Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford) seeks an experienced IT Support Engineer for our IT team at Old Road Campus, Headington, Oxford. The role supports Windows and Linux infrastructure for 750 staff and students to ensure teaching and research run smoothly.

You will resolve incidents, manage requests via our helpdesk, and collaborate with colleagues across the department.

Qualifications

  • Experience in first-line PC support within a customer-focused IT environment.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair hardware and software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Broad understanding of IT systems and willingness to learn new tech.
  • Experience with asset management including stock control.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • organised and detail-oriented with ability to manage deadlines.

Responsibilities

IT Support Engineer

Oxford Population Health (Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford), Old Road Campus, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7LF

The Nuffield Department of Population Health undertakes world-leading research into long term, chronic health conditions, operating large-scale long-term studies and projects to identify the causes, prevention and treatment of diseases that result in avoidable suffering for millions of people around the world. The administrative teams are closely integrated within the department and work with all levels of staff who are committed to the research and teaching undertaken.

We are seeking an experienced IT Support Engineer to join our IT team. The department's extensive and data-intensive research projects require a robust and sophisticated computing infrastructure, supported by an extensive network of computers. The IT Support team plays a vital role in maintaining this infrastructure, ensuring that all research and teaching activities are effectively supported.

The department currently supports over 750 staff and students, managing more than 1,000 desktop, laptop, and mobile devices, along with hundreds of Windows and Linux servers backed by petabyte-scale storage.

Role Responsibilities

As an IT Support Engineer, you will provide expert technical support and guidance to academics, students, staff, and visitors on a broad range of IT matters. Working as part of a collaborative team, you will manage incidents and service requests through our helpdesk system, providing assistance via email, telephone, and in person.

Candidate Requirements
  • Experience in first-line PC support within a customer-focused IT environment
  • Confidence in installing, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware and software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Broad understanding of IT systems
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies quickly
  • Experience with asset management, including ordering and stock control
  • Managing small-scale IT projects (advantageous)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Organised, methodical, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively while meeting deadlines
  • Proactive, collaborative approach, able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Relevant IT qualification such as a BTEC National Diploma or equivalent experience (desirable)
  • Familiarity with ITIL frameworks and processes (desirable)
  • Experience supporting Apple Mac computers, mobile devices, and working within a university IT environment (beneficial)
