Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority in the UK is seeking a Project Manager to lead a diversified IT project portfolio supporting fusion energy research. You will drive planning, governance and delivery, ensuring on-time, on-budget outcomes with high quality and real business value.

The role requires strong leadership, risk and supplier management, and experience with both waterfall and Agile methods. Onsite work at Culham with flexible working options is available and BPSS/DBS checks are required.

Qualifications

  • Degree in IT, Computing, Research, or a related discipline with proven track record delivering complex IT or R&D projects on time, within budget and to quality standards.
  • PM qualification up to Practitioner level and experience delivering complex IT/R&D projects.
  • Strong financial management of multi-million-pound budgets and the ability to maximise project value.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience with various project management methodologies e.g. waterfall and Agile; IT supplier contracts.

  • Lead the successful delivery of IT projects on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Manage all aspects of project delivery: planning, risk/issue management, budgets up to ~£5m, supplier contracts, resources and change control.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders, provide governance, regular reporting and ensure project benefits are realised.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, ensure QA processes and support effective planning and decision-making.
  • Drive continuous improvement and safe delivery, promoting health, safety and quality culture.

Overview of Responsibilities

The salary for this role is £57,117 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). UKAEA is an onsite organisation, and this role requires regular onsite presence (usually between 3-5 days in any given week) in line with business needs. We actively support flexible working arrangements where this is compatible with the role. This role can be based at Culham. This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.



The Role

Join our Computing Division Project Management Group and play a key role in delivering a diverse portfolio of IT projects that support our mission to develop fusion energy. Our projects cover IT infrastructure, digital services, cyber security, and advanced computing, driving innovation and enabling critical research across the organisation. As a Project Manager, you’ll lead projects from planning through to delivery, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Working closely with project teams and stakeholders, you’ll provide effective project governance, manage risks, and ensure successful outcomes that deliver real business value.

Qualifications


  • Essential Requirements: Degree in IT, Computing, Research, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience), with a proven track record of delivering complex IT or R&D projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards. Project management qualification(s) to Practitioner level.

  • Strong project and commercial management skills, including financial management of multi-million-pound budgets and the ability to make sound decisions that maximise project value.

  • Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills, with experience of leading, developing, and motivating high-performing teams.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (including Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint), with a passion for project management best practice, a proactive approach to health and safety, and a good understanding of UK compliance requirements.

  • Advantageous

  • Good background knowledge and understanding of fusion

  • Experience of varied project management methodologies e.g. waterfall, Agile

  • Understanding/experience of IT Supplier contracts / Collaboration agreements

  • Experience of purchasing systems and procurement processes

  • Understanding/experience of CDM regulations (Construction Design and Management Regulations)
