Job description

We’re the UK's largest ports operator with a network of 21 ports around Britain. We handle around one quarter of the UK's seaborne trade and contribute £7.5 billion to our economy every year.

It’s a story we’re proud of but it doesn’t end there. We’re transforming our business and embracing the future.

We offer a vast range of roles spanning the UK, all rooted in a culture that welcomes diversity, fosters talent, encourages internal movement and progression, and places safety as our number one priority.

Please note this role is available as permanent or 6 month FTC. Be part of our ambitious IT team setting strategy, designing IT architecture and leading innovation across ABP. The new operating model you will help build will be the foundation for long-term growth, from security and compliance, to operational excellence, governance and supplier management. You’ll shape how we work and optimise the impact that technology makes on our unique organisation.

We are looking for an IT Portfolio Manager to lead and manage the Portfolio Management team that provides the integrated programme controls, services and assurance to all IT Projects and Programmes. This role will also provide the governance and resource management for planning and integration of the major programmes and projects across all teams in IT in order to achieve successful and efficient delivery to cost, time and quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • The management of a portfolio of projects/programmes focussed on delivering business and technology change across the business.
  • Leadership and performance management for the portfolio management team, whilst maintaining personal delivery focus through active engagement on one or more project or programme deliveries.
  • Providing project & programme assurance to the Solution Delivery and Service Management teams for their portfolio of projects, including providing oversight and challenge, effective reporting and pro-active safeguarding of portfolio-critical items such as budget, client-expectations, dependencies, etc.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered in line with the PMO Framework and appropriate best practices.
  • Identifying, shaping and delivering synergistic opportunities arising from the management of projects and programmes within a portfolio.
  • Creating and maintaining a long-range plan of client and account-driven change to enable the portfolio to be able to pro-actively be prepared to meet the future delivery challenge at the right time, in the right way.
  • Delivering and reporting portfolio change across the spectrum; from small business-change (sub-project) through to large and complex programmes of change.
  • Establishing and maintaining a suitable portfolio organisation and capability for the delivery of change to the required standards and within agreed measures.
  • Delivering a complex series of related projects and programmes, effectively managing their interdependencies and allocating resources to support prioritised opportunities.
  • Demonstrable experience in a senior position in a related Service Delivery environment.
  • Proven Portfolio, Project and Programme management capabilities, with a strong background in portfolio-level assurance, governance and methodology.
  • An excellent influencer and communicator and ability to establish and maintain stakeholder relationships.
  • Not only able to lead a portfolio, but willing and able to 'roll up sleeves' and deliver change personally.
  • Able to organise and lead a team to achieve portfolio, programme and project objectives and targets.
  • Capable of meeting their Accountabilities within the constraints of a fast-paced and demanding delivery organisation.
  • A proven influencer and communicator with stakeholders at all levels, being able to establish effective working relationships with all stakeholders and ensuring effective portfolio communications.
  • An experienced P3M professional with a strong background in portfolio assurance, governance and methodology.
  • Willingness to travel around the Group as required for specific projects and generally.
  • Possess a firm belief in the values of customer service and ABP’s core values of openness and honesty, teamwork and respect, along with the ambition to make a difference and exceed expectations.

Additional Information:

When joining ABP you will find an environment that is both welcoming and challenging. We reward our employees well and offer a generous remuneration package, employer pension, private health insurance and a range of other benefits.
Please note that ABP undertake random screening for substance abuse and operate a zero-tolerance policy. A medical will be required before starting this position also.

We are an equal opportunities employer and we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their background, which helps us to provide a diverse and inclusive working environment.
