Investment Risk Specialist - Capital Solutions

Job Description

Capital Solutions is the newest line of business that Pacific Life Re offers to support clients. We are providing financial reinsurance to clients to enhance their balance sheet, either through accessing trapped capital, reducing earnings volatility or monetising value that currently sits off balance sheet.

The Pricing team operate globally and are responsible for carrying out the risk assessment of each deal, alongside proposing appropriate pricing levels to cover this risk. They will also contribute to the structuring of the deals and client conversations.

The transactions will typically be of a bespoke nature, covering a range of products and risks across the world. The Capital Solutions team sits alongside the Protection and Savings & Retirement teams to offer a full comprehensive product suite to clients.

We have an exciting opportunity for an individual who specialises in investment risk to complement our current team’s skills.

Role & Responsibilities:
  • Lead the assessment of market risk, providing expert insights and recommendations, for Capital Solutions opportunities, whilst ensuring alignment with Pacific Life Re’s risk appetite
  • Collaborating with the wider Capital Solutions / PL Re team to structure innovative solutions that meet clients’ needs while effectively managing market risk
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of potential opportunities, evaluating factors such as counterparty creditworthiness, prevailing market conditions and the underlying asset portfolio
  • Perform robust sensitivity testing on assets to understand the remoteness of risk, potentially leveraging Economic Scenario Generators to inform the analysis
  • Monitor global financial markets closely, translating and explaining market changes and their potential impact on our solutions
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the business lines risk appetite and framework for market risk, ensuring a robust and proactive approach
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills necessary, with the ability to work on a wide range of solutions at once
  • Global experience preferred; ideally Asia / Europe (wider than UK)
  • Ability to run asset models and interpret results. Prior experience in pricing / insurance is not required, but broad understanding of asset risks & strategies for liability driven investments is desirable
  • Strong working knowledge of Bloomberg and asset modelling software
  • Good knowledge of derivatives and investment structures used to support insurance liabilities
  • Professional qualifications (ideally CFA) with 5+ years of professional experience in an investment team
  • Ability to work independently in a flexible, dynamic team with some high-pressure deadlines
  • Excellent understanding of market risks (interest rates, FX, credit spread, liquidity, equity) and various asset classes (equities / fixed income securities / alternatives)
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively explain new concepts to stakeholders and collaborate with other teams around the business
