Firm Description

Hogan Lovells is one of the leading global law firms. Our distinctive market position is founded on our exceptional breadth of practice, on deep industry knowledge, and on our 'one team' global approach. Formed through the combination of two top international law firms, Hogan Lovells has around 2,500 lawyers on six continents.

With a presence in the world's major financial and commercial markets, we are well placed to provide excellent business-oriented advice to our clients locally and internationally. Our people are the key to our success, which is why we seek to recruit and retain the most talented individuals in all regions of our global practice.

Department Description

The Investment Funds group advises on all aspects of investment funds and pooled investment, from the initial structuring of a vehicle, to the legal, regulatory and tax aspects of establishing a fund and then on an ongoing basis advising in relation to its operation and promotion.

The group has a track record and expertise across a range of investment products, but is best known for its work on alternative investment funds.

Work includes both onshore and offshore funds, and both open and closed ended funds. We regularly work on the establishment of funds in the UK, Luxembourg, the Cayman Islands and the Channel Islands, as well as other key jurisdictions such as the US, Ireland and (for African funds) Mauritius. We operate across asset classes, with a particular emphasis on real estate funds, infrastructure funds, renewable energy funds and private equity funds.

The practice is well balanced between work on private funds and listed funds, with the majority of our work acting for GP/sponsors of those funds. On the listed fund side, we have a balanced issuer and bank side practice and are one of the top two or three firms in the market for high-end transactions.

We also have a vibrant practice advising key institutional investors on their investments into the full range of private alternative investment funds, which provides a great insight into the current market terms. We also have a highly-regarded and rapidly growing secondaries practice, working closely with our private equity team on the funds aspects of both GP-led and LP portfolio secondaries transactions.

In addition to traditional real estate funds, the team is also widely recognised for advising on high value real estate transactions and investment and development joint ventures that typically involve fund or fund-like structures.

Lawyers in the team can expect to interact on a regular basis with fund formation colleagues outside London (e.g. the US, Luxembourg and Singapore).

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Possesses good working knowledge and understanding of the legal principles associated with the scope of work outlined above; proactively develops this knowledge further.
  • Shows awareness of legal developments affecting any specialist areas and regularly attends appropriate training sessions.
  • Ability to lead transactions, as appropriate and depending on their complexity, reporting directly to the supervising partner.

Team Work And Interpersonal Skills

  • Motivated, reliable and flexible.
  • Resilient and able to perform effectively under pressure with good time management skills (eg meets deadlines and responds to requests in a highly timely manner).
  • Good attention to detail and focus on accuracy.
  • Has an appreciation of when to seek advice and guidance.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, ensuring timely delivery to high quality standards.
  • Takes responsibility for project issues (i.e., “owns” the problem, seeks to understand assigned tasks, follows through)
  • Strong interpersonal skills (internal and client facing), both written and oral.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a team.
  • Acts as a source of advice to others, sharing knowledge and expertise.
