Description

This position is with ARIA, a project that explores power, influence and corporate accountability in the climate and nature space, hosted by the Meliore Foundation. ARIA uses research, analysis, data insights and investigative approaches to reveal and challenge obstacles to a cleaner, more sustainable world.

We're looking for an Investigative Researcher with excellent research skills and strong campaign instincts to help us challenge one of the last remaining holdouts of the fossil fuel industry - the steel sector.

Our steel team focuses on the politics, science and narratives that shape climate policies for the steel industry and its upstream suppliers, in particular the coal industry. You will work with colleagues and external partners to conduct investigations which influence the debate, and support campaigns that challenge the ability of the iron, steel and coal industries to block steel sector decarbonisation.

We are looking for someone with strong research and analysis skills, and experience in campaigning, journalism or investigative research. Our ideal candidate has an eye for media stories and a naturally collaborative and generous approach to working with colleagues.

You will develop your own original research, work collaboratively to develop investigations, campaign approaches and messaging, produce materials and briefings, and become a source of intelligence and insights on steel and climate. You will work with a network of civil society partners, journalists and policy makers to influence key narratives and decisions on steel and climate policy.

How you'll contribute

The Investigative Researcher will work with the Senior Steel Analyst to:

• Conduct high-quality, robust research and investigations which help create the conditions for a more sustainable steel sector;
• Compile credible, concise briefings for allies and partners to inform their understanding and become a source of intelligence and insight;
• Build relationships with key stakeholders including journalists, industry, analysts, NGOs and legal experts with an interest in this space;
• Under the guidance of senior colleagues, develop and refine ARIA’s strategic understanding of sustainability transitions in the steel space.
  
  

Our ideal candidate has

• Strong research or investigative skills and an appetite for strategy;
• Experience in working in campaigning or journalistic environments and building and maintaining relationships with journalists, industry and/or civil society organisations;
• Familiarity with the opportunities and pitfalls of deploying analysis, research or investigative journalism in campaign contexts. Experience of pitching research and investigations to media organisations is an asset;
• A genuine interest in decarbonising heavy industry, and a commitment to an inclusive and just approach to tackling climate change;
• An understanding of climate and energy policy. Experience in working in or on the steel or coal industry is an asset;
• Fluent written and spoken English and the ability to produce clear, well-sourced and accurate briefings and summaries, or news articles;
• The skills necessary to flourish in a remote, fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones;
• The ability to work with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers with a spirit of generosity and mutual support;
• Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
