Job summary

TQR Consultancy Ltd in Plymouth is seeking an experienced Inventory Accountant to join its Head Office team. The role focuses on detailed analysis of inventory performance, stock ageing, trends and discrepancies, and translating insights into actionable recommendations.

You will work with purchasing, merchandising, supply chain and distribution centres to improve purchasing efficiency, strengthen controls and maximise profitability, while maintaining UK GAAP compliance.

Qualifications

  • Part-qualified accountant status or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Excel and Power BI skills essential.
  • Strong numerical and analytical abilities.
  • Experience with ERP and accounting software.

Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed analysis of inventory KPIs, including stock levels, ageing and trends, with clear commentary and recommendations to support management decision‑making.
  • Analyse complex inventory data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, translating findings into actionable insight for purchasing, merchandising and senior stakeholders.
  • Investigate and identify the root causes of inventory discrepancies, quantify their financial impact and recommend corrective action to minimise stock losses across sites and distribution centres.
  • Develop forecasting and trend models to anticipate potential inventory issues and support future purchasing decisions.
  • Present financial and inventory insights to non‑finance stakeholders through clear, concise and data‑driven communication.

Job description

A growing multi‑site retail business is looking for an experienced Inventory Accountant to join its Head Office team in Plymouth.

This is an analytical and commercially focused role, sitting at the interface between finance, inventory, supply chain and decision‑making. The successful candidate will go beyond monitoring and reporting inventory levels, providing detailed analysis of stock levels, ageing, trends and discrepancies and translating this insight into actionable recommendations.

The role will play an important part in improving purchasing efficiency, strengthening inventory controls and maximising profitability across the business.

About the Role

As Inventory Accountant, you will be responsible for providing accurate, insightful analysis of inventory performance while ensuring strong financial controls and governance.

You will work closely with purchasing, merchandising, supply chain, stores and distribution centres, using data to identify risks and opportunities and support informed commercial decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce detailed analysis of inventory KPIs, including stock levels, ageing and trends, with clear commentary and recommendations to support management decision‑making.
  • Analyse complex inventory data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, translating findings into actionable insight for purchasing, merchandising and senior stakeholders.
  • Investigate and identify the root causes of inventory discrepancies, quantify their financial impact and recommend corrective action to minimise stock losses across sites and distribution centres.

Control & Governance
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of core inventory data and systems, ensuring reliable information is available for analysis and decision‑making.
  • Ensure accurate inventory valuations and compliance with relevant UK GAAP requirements.
  • Maintain strong financial governance and controls in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with stores, distribution centres and auditors on physical stock takes, ensuring robust counting processes and accurate inventory valuation.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of inventory policies, procedures and controls, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
About You

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical accounting knowledge with excellent analytical and commercial skills.

You will have:

  • Advanced Excel and Power BI skills, with the ability to analyse complex datasets and turn findings into practical recommendations.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain financial and analytical information to non‑finance audiences.
  • Part‑qualified accountant status, or equivalent relevant experience, alongside strong analytical capability.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills, with a strong attention to detail and the ability to identify inaccuracies and anomalies.
  • Demonstrable experience using accounting software and ERP systems.
  • A collaborative and innovative approach, with strong commercial awareness and business acumen.
  • The ability to work confidently across finance, purchasing, supply chain and operational teams.
