Job description

Welcome to Wanstead! Our largest GP hospital in the group is looking for a veterinary surgeon to join our team of internal medics and provide invaluable investigative and diagnostic support.

About your new role!

The team at Wanstead are looking for a vet who has been chomping at the bit for a permanent role in internal medicine, having already completed a certificate, or in process of completing one. We have a plethora of endoscopy and ultrasound cases so prior experience in these areas is ideal.

As a hospital vet some of your duties will include:
  • Ensure a high and improving standard of evidence‑based clinical care at the Hospital.
  • Participate in the clinical consulting and medical rota.
  • Ensure compliance with RCVS Codes of Conduct, Practice Standards and relevant medicines regulation within the Hospital.
  • Ability to work independently while recognising limitations and seeking support when required
  • Carry out consultations, thoroughly examining all pets presented and making management and treatment recommendations which are based on best practice and are evidence‑based and in accordance with GVG protocols.
  • Maintain, prescribe and dispense all medications in accordance with appropriate current medicines legislation and RCVS guidance.
  • Investigate cases fully and appropriately, using diagnostic aids such as radiography, endoscopy, ultrasound and blood testing.
  • Confident communicator with a client‑centred approach.
  • Good clinical reasoning and time‑management skills.
  • Foster a culture of excellent working relationships within the Hospital and be responsible for the achievement of high morale and a strong team spirit.

Wanstead Veterinary Hospital provides an excellent first opinion, emergency, critical care, and referral service to our clients and local network of 20 plus branches and works to the highest clinical standards.

There is state of the art diagnostic support, with a CT scanner, a commercial laboratory, a strong medical team, and experienced surgeons routinely conducting advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue, and minimally invasive surgery all available on site.

You will be working alongside a large supportive team consisting of approximately 25 vets, 27 RVNs, 14 SVNs, 7 VCAs and a large front of house team who are integral in maintaining excellent client care.

You are fully supported by an established management structure including senior internal medic vet, senior RVN’s, 2 deputy head nurses, head nurse, head vet and hospital manager.

Your rota will be on a 6 weekly rotational basis made up of an average of 40 hours per week (4 day week), inclusive of your 1:3 Saturday and 1:6 Sunday weekend rotation. You will be rota ‘d to up to 2 bank holidays per year and be included in the last resort on‑call rotation approximately once every 2 weeks.

Wanstead itself is on the outskirts of urban Essex but is close enough to rural life for that countryside relief. Transport links into London do not get better than a short walk to a Central Line tube station! It is a beautiful area of London with lots of green space including the local Bluebell Woods. It also has a plethora of independent restaurants, bakeries, pubs and coffee houses to keep you busy and refreshed in your time off!

Please be aware there is no on‑site parking available and public transport is advised, but with stations and bus stops a stone’s throw away you have plenty of choice.

What we offer you

The salary band for this full‑time role is £45,000 to £72,000 depending on prior experience and allowing room for growth and personal progression within the role.
