Job description

ROLE OVERVIEW: The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer will demonstrate sound skills in engineering design and be comfortable working on projects from inception to completion, able to undertake various aspects with minimal supervision. They will assist senior staff in preparing conceptual designs of HVAC systems, pipe work systems, plant sizing, and calculations. The engineer will be a strong team player, keen to develop their skills, working closely with senior engineers to assist with project administration and coordination. They will also seek opportunities to grow in business development and enhance their understanding of financial and contractual aspects of projects, alongside continually developing technical knowledge. The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer will handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritising work to ensure timely delivery.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design
  • Support senior staff in designing safe, economical, and reliable mechanical systems that meet contractual requirements and comply with standards and regulations.
  • Prepare clear and concise drawings, specifications, and product schedules for mechanical systems.
  • Coordinate mechanical design with other disciplines (architectural, structural, electrical) to minimise conflicts and revisions.
  • Review tender submissions, drawings, and technical submittals to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Conduct site visits and monitor progress against the design with minimal supervision.
  • Assist subcontractors to ensure adherence to drawings and specifications and resolve construction issues.
Management
  • Monitor workload against project deliverables.
  • Assist in planning work schedules to meet project timelines.
  • Provide regular updates to line managers.
  • Utilise strong oral and written communication skills, including report writing, for internal and external clarity.
  • Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Build and maintain relationships with potential new clients and existing contacts.
  • Assist with delivering presentations and pitches as needed.
  • Manage small projects under guidance, overseeing deliverables, resources, and financials.
Health & Safety
  • Understand CDM Regulations, especially the Designers’ responsibilities.
  • Complete risk assessments promptly.
  • Report all accidents, incidents, or near misses.
  • Adhere strictly to all H&S requirements.
  • Use and maintain appropriate PPE.
Technical
  • Develop understanding of BSRIA BG6, RIBA stages, Part L, BREEAM, and renewable technologies.
  • Gain a reasonable understanding of other MEP disciplines to appreciate their impact on overall design.
  • Proficient in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Hevacomp or IES, Outlook.
  • Develop skills in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Engage in Continual Professional Development through journals, seminars, and in-house training.
Financial
  • Understand project costing principles and manage change control.
  • Assist with fee proposal preparations occasionally.
  • Maintain utilisation levels and complete timesheets weekly.
Project Interface
  • Attend design team and client meetings, sometimes as the sole company representative.
  • Liaise with clients and others for technical and operational project information.
  • Support senior staff in providing project updates to clients and stakeholders.
  • Maintain up-to-date project documentation following file management protocols.
