We are supporting an Acute NHS Trust in London with the urgent appointment of an experienced Interim General Manager to lead the operational delivery of Emergency and Urgent Care Services, including ED and Urgent Care.
This is a high-profile leadership position, requiring a strong operational manager with extensive experience in acute urgent care pathways, performance management, and workforce leadership. The role will be appointed via the CCS NMNC RM6277 framework, and remuneration will be in line with NHS agency capped rates for Band 8c.
About the Role:
- The Interim General Manager will lead the end-to-end operational performance, service delivery and strategic implementation across the Trust’s Urgent and Emergency Care footprint;
- The role includes direct responsibility for managing performance against the 4-hour ED target, CQUINs, KPIs, CQC standards, and supporting the financial and workforce agenda across these high-pressure areas.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide clear operational leadership across Urgent and Emergency Care;
- Lead workforce planning, recruitment, and management of direct reports (including matrons, service managers, and operational leads);
- Manage performance and delivery of access targets (including 4-hour standard) and internal KPIs;
- Oversee budgets, cost improvement programmes (CIPs), and service line reporting (SLR);
- Support medical staffing strategy and Consultant job planning with Clinical Directors;
- Contribute to strategic planning and patient experience improvement initiatives;
- Support bed modelling, flow management and length of stay reductions;
- Lead and coordinate daily bed meetings and system response as required;
- Act as a key liaison with commissioning bodies and urgent care partners (e.g. 111, OOH, MIUs).
Experience and Skills Required:Essential:- Proven track record in senior operational management within an acute NHS setting;
- In-depth experience of urgent and emergency care services;
- Excellent understanding of NHS targets, access standards, and commissioning frameworks;
- Demonstrated ability to manage large multidisciplinary teams and high-pressure environments;
- Budgetary management and CIP delivery experience;
- Strong leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills;
- Experience working with Cerner Millennium PAS modules;
- Knowledge of national urgent care priorities, queue management, and HOT clinics;
- Educated to Master’s degree level or equivalent senior NHS operational experience.
Desirable:- Experience working with urgent care alliance models and regional urgent care strategies;
- Familiarity with Directory of Services (DoS) and integrated pathways with community and primary care urgent providers.
