Job Title: Interim Finance Officer

Our client, an independent school, is seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Bookkeeper / Finance Officer to support its financial management. The successful candidate will ideally be AAT qualified, and have proven experience in bookkeeping and processing VAT returns. Joining on an interim rolling basis for an initial period of 2 months, this is a largely remote, 32 hours a week role offering a lot of flexibility.

Description

The duties and responsibilities for this Part-Time Interim Finance Officer include (but are not limited to):

  • Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions, ensuring entries are up-to-date and comply with accounting standards.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely processing of invoices and payments and ensure timely follow-up on any outstanding balances.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns in compliance with HMRC regulations.
  • Record and reconcile bank transactions, ensuring accuracy and alignment with the school's financial records and ensure all discrepancies are resolved.
  • Manage student fee accounts, including issuing invoices, tracking payments, and liaising with parents regarding overdue accounts.
  • Handle petty cash, ensuring accurate recording and reconciliation.
  • Handle queries related to fees and payments with professionalism and sensitivity.
  • Track and manage company expenses, ensuring they are in line with budgets.
  • Maintain accurate and organised records for audit trails and reporting purposes.

Skills

The skills required for this Part-Time Interim Finance Officer include (but are not limited to):

  • Proven experience in bookkeeping or a similar financial role, with a strong understanding of basic accounting principles and practices.
  • Previous experience within the education sector and familiarity with the Engage school finance system are highly desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational abilities, able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of VAT regulations and processing VAT returns.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently, managing time and tasks effectively without constant supervision.
  • A recognised qualification in bookkeeping (e.g., AAT) is preferred.
