Job description

We are proud to be working in partnership with a high-performing NHS Trust to recruit an exceptional individual for the post of Interim Associate Director of Corporate Affairs. This fixed-term opportunity, offered at Band 8c, provides flexible hybrid working and is ideally suited to a senior governance professional ready to play a critical leadership role at Board level.

As the Trust Secretary, you will be the Trust’s most senior governance expert and adviser—ensuring compliance with all statutory, constitutional, and regulatory responsibilities, including those set out by NHS England & Improvement and the Care Quality Commission. The post holder will work closely with the Chief Executive, Chair, and Trust Board, providing expert guidance on all corporate governance and legal matters, and ensuring the smooth and effective running of the Board and its committees.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Acting as Trust Secretary, providing strategic and operational leadership across all areas of corporate governance;
  • Ensuring the Trust meets its legal obligations under NHS legislation, regulatory standards, and constitutional frameworks;
  • Leading the development and maintenance of effective governance systems and Board assurance processes;
  • Advising the Board and executive team on complex legal and governance issues, including interpreting evolving national guidance;
  • Ensuring the effective and compliant operation of the Trust Board and its committees, including the annual cycle of business and agenda coordination;
  • Producing the Trust’s Annual Governance Statement and supporting key external reporting requirements, including submissions to NHSEI and CQC;
  • Managing governance arrangements for the Council of Governors, elections, stakeholder appointments, and the Trust’s Annual General Meeting.
About You
  • To be successful in this role, you will be a credible and experienced senior leader with:
  • A master’s degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent experience);
  • Chartered Secretary or Company Secretary qualification (or willingness to obtain); legal qualifications are highly desirable;
  • Significant experience in NHS or wider public sector governance at a senior level;
  • Advanced knowledge of corporate governance, legal compliance, risk management, and the functioning of NHS Trust Boards;
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing, and written communication skills;
  • A strong sense of integrity, political astuteness, and the ability to provide calm, authoritative guidance in complex or high-pressure environments.
Why Apply?
  • Band 8c remuneration;
  • Flexible hybrid working model;
  • A values-led organisation committed to excellence in patient care, accountability, and inclusion.
This is a rare opportunity to make a real impact at the heart of NHS governance. If you are ready to bring your expertise to a Trust that values integrity, quality, and strong leadership, we would be delighted to hear from you.
