Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is seeking an Integrated Modeller and Scenario Developer to work on the JINTRAC core-SOL-divertor coupled transport code, analyzing transport and confinement in tokamak experiments. The role advances core/edge transport codes and collaborates with code developers on advanced physics and transport models.

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent) in plasma physics.
  • Experience running plasma integrated simulation codes.
  • Experience developing scientific codes with good software engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to international collaborations and work packages (EURO fusion-WPTE/TSVV, ITER, or private fusion companies).
  • Deliver high-quality research and software outputs aligned with UKAEA priorities and disseminate in journals.
  • Guide students and early career researchers in integrated modelling.

The salary for this role is £43,702(inclusive of a Specialist Allowance) . Onsite working is expected for 3days a week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role can be based at any of the following sites:Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

As a Integrated Modeller and Scenario Developer, you willexploit the JINTRAC core-SOL-divertor coupled transport code and its integrated modules to understand global tokamak experimental results relating to transport and confinement, validate new physics models, and perform cross-code benchmarks.
You will also be contributing to the advancement of core/edge transport codes, and work with code developers to develop/implement advanced tokamak physics and transport models.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to research carried out through international collaborations and work packages, such as EURO fusion-WPTE/TSVV, ITER, or private fusion companies.
  • Deliver high-quality and impactful research and/or software outputs that are well aligned with UKAEA programme priorities, and disseminating these internally, externally, and in journal publications.
  • Guide students and early career researchers in integrated modelling.

Please be aware that this position is offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 2 years.

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in plasma physics.
  • Experience in running plasma integrated simulation codes within different frameworks and on different platforms.
  • Experience developing scientific codes for computational physics, including knowledge of good software engineering practices.
