Job Description

Based in Livingston, this role is with a group of European companies engaged in the design, development, manufacture, and distribution of analytical systems, life science equipment, and laboratory instruments. The company has been operating since 1920 and is now part of a global multinational. They are seeking an Instrumentation Scientist for a 12-month fixed-term contract to support their multidisciplinary scientific and engineering product development team.

The Instrumentation Development Scientist will support the Project Manager in developing new products, handling bespoke customer requests, and improving existing products. Responsibilities include generating and maintaining technical documentation, performing performance testing, processing data, writing reports, and providing feedback from end-users. The role requires collaboration with mechanical, optical, electrical, and software engineers, as well as communication with marketing, sales, operations, and production teams.

Responsibilities
  1. Performance testing of existing products, prototypes, and test rigs.
  2. Processing data and preparing technical reports.
  3. Acting as the product end-user and providing feedback.
  4. Supporting the creation and maintenance of technical documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A degree or higher in a physical sciences discipline with a strong analytical focus or relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of optical spectroscopic equipment such as UV-Visible, Fluorescence, and Microplate Spectrophotometers.
  • Practical experience with scientific instrumentation and laboratory work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience in R&D environments and scientific optical design is beneficial.
  • Experience with quality management systems like ISO 9001 is desirable.
  • Proficiency in preparing standard solutions with accurate weighing and pipetting techniques is preferred.

The role is primarily on-site, but flexible working from home one day a week may be possible after initial establishment.
