ALTEN is seeking an Instrumentation & Control Engineer to join our Energy & Utilities team in the UK, supporting long-term critical infrastructure projects. You will work across OT/SCADA platforms, develop expertise in OT Cyber Security, and contribute to safety and reliability improvements.

This role offers collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, ongoing learning, and clear career development within a global engineering consultancy. Flexible working options are role dependent.

Qualifications

• Experience with OT, PLCs, SCADA, DCS, or process control environments.
• Understanding of instrumentation systems, sensors, actuators, and field equipment.
• Experience supporting engineering activities through the project lifecycle, including design, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of configuration management and engineering change processes.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams and engage with stakeholders at all levels.

Job Description

We are looking for an Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Engineer to join our Energy & Utilities team in the UK, supporting long-term projects across critical infrastructure and industrial environments.

You will support the implementation, modification, maintenance and optimisation of Operational Technology (OT) systems, including SCADA/HMI platforms, industrial control systems, networks, and field instrumentation. The role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in both Operational Technology and OT Cyber Security within highly regulated industries.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide technical support across the full lifecycle of I&C and OT systems, from requirements definition through to commissioning and maintenance.
• Assist with the design, modification, testing, validation and configuration management of industrial control systems.
• Support operational and maintenance activities to ensure system reliability, safety and performance.
• Contribute to compliance with industrial safety, regulatory and cybersecurity requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams and client stakeholders to deliver project objectives.
• Share knowledge, lessons learned and best practices to support continuous improvement within ALTEN and our client teams.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

• Experience working with industrial control systems, Operational Technology (OT), PLCs, SCADA, DCS, or process control environments.
• Understanding of instrumentation systems, control loops, sensors, actuators, and associated field equipment.
• Experience supporting engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, including design, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of configuration management and engineering change processes.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams and engage with stakeholders at all levels.
• Understanding of safety, quality, and regulatory requirements within highly regulated industries.

Required Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, orequivalentmilitary experience.
• Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution or working towards professional registration (IEng/CEng).
• Experience within the Nuclear, Energy, Utilities, Defence, Rail, Oil & Gas, or other highly regulated industries.
• Knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security principles and standards.
• Familiarity with IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 62443, or similar industry standards.
• Experience with industrial networks and communications protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, or OPC.
• Knowledge of functional safety systems and safety-related instrumentation.
• Experience producing or reviewing technical documentation, specifications, test procedures, and engineering reports.
• Understanding of asset management, reliability engineering, or maintenance optimisation principles.
