Do you have sector experience within either a local authority or defence fire and rescue service environment, with knowledge across the functions of the Service?

If so His Majesty’s Fire Service Inspectorate in Scotland (HMFSI) is seeking an Inspection Support Manager. The role and purpose of HMFSI is defined by the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 which was substantially amended by the Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 on 1 April 2013. The Fire Service Inspectorate in Scotland exists to provide independent, risk based and proportionate professional inspection of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS). The Inspectorate also provides independent, professional advice to Scottish Ministers and the Chief Inspector has an arbitration function in relation to non-domestic fire safety.

This is a part-time (0.6 FTE or 3 working days) fixed-term appointment which will run for a period of two years with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Inspectors in the planning of and preparation for inspections of the SFRS. Including carrying out inspections as part of an inspection team in accordance with legislation and Inspectorate guidelines.
  • Plan and develop inspection fieldwork including arranging inspection visits.
  • Assist in the conducting of detailed quantitative information gathering, analysis, investigation and be able to draw-up conclusions of fieldwork to assist the individual inspections desired outcomes .
  • Create bespoke assessment tools for use during qualitative work with SFRS personnel. Including the preparation of inspection reports, briefing notes and presentations in regard to the work of the various inspections.
  • Form an integral part of the Inspectorate’s inspection team taking part in inspection fieldwork.
  • Liaise effectively within the business support team to assist with supporting the business management side of HMFSI.
  • Fulfil the role of HMFSI Budgetary Control Liaison Officer (BCLO).

Experience

Significant experience of working at a senior level within an fire and rescue service with operational command experience.

Knowledge and understanding of the importance of analysis in supporting the findings from inspection activity.

Working Pattern

This is a two year fixed-term part-time appointment consisting of 0.6 FTE/3 working days. The working pattern is normally Monday to Wednesday.

The post will be based at St Andrew’s House, Regent Road, Edinburgh. This post will include travel across Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom (travel and accommodation expenses for these business trips will be reimbursed).
