East London NHS Foundation Trust Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) provides specialist assessment and therapeutic support for children, young people, and their families who are experiencing complex, severe, or persistent emotional, behavioural, or developmental difficulties. Our services operate primarily within tiers three and four of the national CAMHS model.

The Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health, based in Newham, offers a range of inpatient services, including an Acute Ward, Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU), and a Day Service.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and committed Pharmacy Technician to join our specialist CAMHS pharmacy team.

In this role, you will:

Deliver a comprehensive medicines management service to CAMHS patients, their families, and the multidisciplinary teams responsible for their care.

Work closely with the CAMHS Pharmacist to further develop and strengthen inpatient pharmacy services.

Collaborate with colleagues at Mile End Dispensary and Newham Centre for Mental Health to ensure an efficient dispensing and supply service.

Provide expert advice on medicines management and play an active role in shaping Trust-wide pharmacy services for CAMHS.

Main duties of the job

Provide safe, effective, and timely medicines management service to CAMHS

Support patients, parents, and carers with information and guidance on medicines use, adherence, and side-effect management.

Undertake medicines reconciliation on admission and discharge to ensure accurate prescribing and continuity of care.

Clinical & Multidisciplinary Support

Work as part of the multidisciplinary team to contribute to treatment planning and decision-making regarding medicines use.

Provide advice and guidance to staff on medicines storage, handling, and administration in line with legal and Trust policies.

Identify and escalate potential medicines-related risks, errors, or discrepancies to the pharmacist or wider team.

Supply & Dispensing

Liaise with pharmacy dispensaries to ensure efficient dispensing and supply of medicines.

  • Participate in the dispensary rota based at Mile End hospital

Monitor stock levels, order medicines, and ensure appropriate storage (including controlled drugs and fridge lines)

Policy, Training & Service Development

Work closely with the CAMHS Pharmacist to develop and implement pharmacy services tailored to the needs of young people in CAMHS.

Contribute to the development of local and Trust-wide policies, protocols, and procedures relating to medicines management.

Provide training on medicines management to nursing staff within the unit.

Participate in audits and quality improvement projects

Job responsibilities
  • To assist with the provision of a high quality pharmacy service to patients of the Trust
  • To undertake general dispensary and distribution activities including ward based top ups.
  • To assist the technical and professional staff in the day-to-day running of the Department
  • Co-ordinates and maintains medication supply to the wards and teams.
  • Assesses identified patients individual pharmaceutical care needs within 72 hours of identification
  • Initiates and completes a Medicines Management Care Plan for each identified patient
  • Is a key member of the Multidisciplinary Team, participating in weekly team meetings in order to maximize patients potential for independent medicines management
  • Ensures all documentation in regard to Medications Management on the unit is completed accurately
  • To participate in dispensary duties based in Mile End Hospital
  • To be responsible for the training and development of student technicians.
  • To prepare discharge medication (TTAs) in a timely and efficient manner
  • To communicate discharge information to Community Pharmacies and GPs

Registration with GPhC
  • Registered with the GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Evidence of CPD
Experience and Qualifications
  • Experience of working as an MMT and completing medicines reconciliation
  • Has worked in dispensary and is ACT accredited or willing to work towards this
  • Experience of working within Mental Health/CAMHS
  • Completed Education Supervisor course or willing to work towards this
