Ground Control is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to maintain and evolve a mixed Windows on‑premise and Azure environment. You will handle BAU tasks and project work, ensuring stability, security and performance.

You’ll join a supportive IT team, work hybrid from Essex, and gain exposure to cloud migrations and modern Microsoft technologies.

Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Hybrid / Essex

Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday

You enjoy getting stuck into technical problems, understanding how things work and finding the right solution. You’re just as comfortable supporting an established on-premise environment as you are getting involved in projects and helping an organisation move towards the cloud.

That’s exactly what we’re looking for at Ground Control.

Joining our IT team as an Infrastructure Engineer, you’ll work across a varied Microsoft infrastructure environment, supporting our core on-premise systems while also contributing to our longer‑term journey into Azure.

This is a hands‑on role with a mix of BAU and project work, so you'll need to be comfortable switching between priorities, troubleshooting problems and taking ownership when something needs fixing.

What you'll do:

• Manage and support our Windows Server and Hyper‑V environments, ensuring our infrastructure remains stable, secure and performing effectively.
• Troubleshoot infrastructure and platform issues, taking ownership of problems through to resolution.
• Support Microsoft Intune and Defender, helping maintain a secure and well‑managed environment.
• Work across our wider Microsoft infrastructure, including Active Directory, Group Policy and Microsoft 365.
• Support our hybrid and Azure environments, contributing to our ongoing transition from on‑premise infrastructure into the cloud.
• Get involved in infrastructure projects and improvements, alongside your day‑to‑day BAU responsibilities.
• Monitor, maintain and improve our infrastructure estate, identifying potential issues and opportunities to strengthen resilience.
• Work closely with our wider IT team and Service Desk, sharing knowledge and providing support with more complex technical issues.

What we're looking for:

• Strong hands‑on experience supporting Windows Server environments.
• Good knowledge of Hyper‑V or similar virtualisation technologies such as VMware.
• Experience with Active Directory and Group Policy.
• Experience supporting Microsoft Intune and Defender.
• A strong Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Engineer or 3rd Line infrastructure background.
• Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure and systems issues.
• Comfortable working across both BAU support and infrastructure projects.
• Exposure to Azure and hybrid environments, ideally including involvement in migrations from on‑premise infrastructure into Azure.
• A methodical approach to troubleshooting and root cause investigation.
• Someone who is comfortable taking ownership, adapting to changing priorities and working across a broad technology estate.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non‑technical colleagues.

Desirable:

• Previous experience working within an MSP or similarly fast‑paced technical environment.
• Experience supporting or delivering migrations from on‑premise infrastructure into Azure.
• Broader networking, storage, backup and infrastructure experience.
