Infection Prevention and Control Specialist Practitioner

The post holder will be responsible for the development and delivery of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) service in line with local and national policy to meet the needs acute (Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust), and community (Cornwall Partnership Foundation Trust) Trusts. Providing clinical advice and knowledge about the prevention, management, monitoring and control of infection to staff.

The post holder will be an experienced practitioner with minimum of 2 years post registration clinical experience within their own specialty or professional practice who uses specialist knowledge and skills to support the prevention, management, monitoring and control of infection to Trust staff.

Main duties of the job

Undertake relevant clinical assessment, reviewing clinical signs and results to support the patient's treatment plan as required.

Produce accurate and complete documentation and patient records consistent with legislation, policies and procedures

Act as a resource for staff advising on local, Trust and national policy, procedures and guidelines in relation to IPC ensuring patient safety and clinical governance.

Support staff development in IPC in order to maximise potential, encouraging everyone to learn from each other and from external good practice.

Develop and contribute to local IPC guidelines, interpreting and adapting national protocols and standards to enhance patient care and safety.

Sensitively challenge inappropriate practice and poor compliance to Infection Prevention and Control policy.

Deputise for the IPC Lead Nurse and/or Senior Specialist Practitioners in their absence.

Teach and support the development of education in all aspects of IPC in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.

Deliver IPC Mandatory training, Corporate Induction, and IPC training .

Develop IPC Link Practitioners to a defined level of clinical skill in order to support and educate colleagues in infection prevention and control.

Design, co-ordinate and regularly undertake audit, research and development activities providing written feedback where appropriate.

Person Specification
Professional Qualification and Experience
  • NMC or HPC registration
  • At least 2 years post registration clinical experience in professional practice or 2 years' experience in clinical setting.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Able to work across CFT and RCHT. Therefore able to drive with UK full driver's license.
  • University qualification or training in Infection Prevention and Control
  • Experience as IPAC practitioner, IPAC Link Practitioner or had student placement in IPC.
  • Audit or research experience
  • Teaching and education experience

  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Willingness to undertake training as required.
