Job summary

University of Staffordshire Business Engagement is seeking a proactive Technical Assistant to support a range of workshop environments at Stoke Campus. The role focuses on maintaining safe, orderly spaces and providing practical support to technical, academic and student users.

The successful candidate will help with day‑to‑day workshop operations, health and safety procedures, stock management and the preparation of materials for Teaching and Learning activities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and organise workshop spaces and housekeeping.
  • Monitor health, safety and PPE procedures across workshops.
  • Assist with stock checks, inventory management and procurement.
  • Prepare materials and resources for TI sessions and teaching activities.
  • Support set‑up of teaching activities and assist students as needed.
  • Provide frontline support to users and direct to specialist staff when required.
  • Assist with basic servicing of workshop equipment and resources.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and SOPs in health and safety.

About The Role

We are seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Technical Assistant to join our Technical Services team supporting a diverse range of specialist workshop environments. This exciting role provides an opportunity to work across multiple technical areas including wood, metal, resin, print, ceramics and fashion workshops, supporting teaching, learning and creative practice.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining safe, organised and effective workshop environments while providing practical support to technical, academic and student users.

Main Responsibilities
  • Assist with the day-to‑day maintenance, organisation and housekeeping of workshop spaces.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of health and safety procedures across workshop areas.
  • Monitor the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and promote safe working practices.
  • Contribute to the development and review of risk assessments, safe operating procedures (SOPs) and other health and safety documentation.
  • Support stock control activities, including stock checks, inventory management and ordering of materials and consumables.
  • Assist technical staff with the preparation of materials, equipment and resources for Technical Instruction (TI) sessions.
  • Support academic staff with the set‑up and preparation of teaching and learning activities.
  • Provide frontline support to students using workshop facilities, responding to routine technical enquiries and signposting users to appropriate specialist assistance when required.
  • Assist with the preparation, maintenance and basic servicing of workshop equipment and resources.
  • Help maintain high standards of cleanliness, security and operational readiness across all workshop environments.
