Job summary

Heathrow is seeking a Fire Engineer graduate to manage and enhance fire and life safety assets across the airport. You will work toward chartership in a dynamic, safety-focused environment, with mentorship from world-class experts and opportunities to influence safety culture.

The role covers oversight of fire protection systems, asset management planning, and collaboration with operations, projects, and maintenance teams.

Qualifications

• HNC in Fire Engineering or equivalent required.
• Higher degree in Fire/Mechanical/Chemical/ Aeronautical Engineering or Physics desirable.
• Experience in maintenance and asset management practices is valued.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary engineering and operational environments.
• Strong analytical and safety leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee fire detection, suppression, smoke ventilation, life safety systems, and related assets.
• Benchmark proposals against Heathrow standards and UK BS.
• Provide fire-related technical support to operations and project teams.
• Develop and implement asset management plans and assess asset performance against life cycles and risks.
• Lead continuous improvement to enhance asset performance and support rail control system queries.
• Engage in a learning environment and contribute early-stage technical design input.

Job Description

As a Fire Engineer, you will be responsible for managing and enhancing a variety of fire & life safety assets, policies and processes across Heathrow Airport. This is an exciting opportunity for graduates to immerse themselves in impactful projects and contribute to the safety and efficiency of our operations. This opportunity will help shape your career path toward chartership in a supportive and dynamic environment.

Your role will involve

• Oversee Fire Detection Systems, Fire Suppression Systems, smoke ventilation systems, life safety systems, building fabric and structure, fire engineering, personal safety equipment, perimetry, and change control systems.
• Benchmark proposals against Heathrow and British Standards.
• Provide fire-related technical support to operational and project teams, and specialist engineering support to development and maintenance teams.
• Develop and implement robust asset management plans and strategies, ensuring effective solutions, and evaluate asset performance against life cycles, performance metrics, and risk assessments.
• Drive continuous improvement plans to enhance asset performance and availability, and support project teams with technical queries related to rail control systems & signalling assets in the sub-surface environment.
• Engage in a learning environment with opportunities to influence safety culture and practices, and provide early-stage technical design input.

These Skills Are Essential

• Hold a minimum of an HNC (or equivalent) in Fire Engineering or a related engineering discipline. A higher qualification, such as a BSc, BEng, MSc, or MEng in Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, is desirable. Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
• Strong knowledge and experience in maintenance and management practices.
• Understanding of and ability to interpret and apply relevant industry standards and statutory requirements.
• Ability to work within multidisciplinary engineering and operational environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a systematic approach to fault diagnosis and risk assessment.
• Demonstrable safety leadership.

Ideally, you’ll also be or working towards:

• Eng Tech or IEng or CEng registration (working towards) with the Engineering Council.

Working Location

Our Hybrid working approach offers the opportunity for colleagues in some roles to work from home for an average of two days a week, providing the flexibility to work in an agile way whilst ensuring we deliver for the operational needs of Heathrow. Working arrangements vary from team to team and will be confirmed during the recruitment process. You’ll need to be based in the UK and within a commutable distance to Heathrow.
