Please note this job is NOT an employment with Torfaen County Borough Council. Torfaen County Borough Council have an Independent Living Team that supports and enables people to employ their own care and support staff known as Personal Assistants.

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate personal assistant (PA) for a young person with a diagnosis of global developmental delay, a visual and hearing impairment as well as a diagnosis of ASD (autism spectrum disorder).

This is a rewarding role where you will be working alongside another PA to make a significant difference in this young person’s life, helping them develop life skills, manage their behaviour, and achieve their full potential.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct support and supervision to one young person with challenging behaviour in a community setting, focusing on behavioural management and skill development. Implement de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies when necessary.
  • Promote a safe and inclusive environment that encourages personal growth, independence, and social integration.
  • Employ effective communication techniques to build rapport, trust, and positive relationships with the young person and their families.
  • Observe and document behaviours, progress, and incidents, ensuring that they are accurate and a true reflection.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including social workers, school, respite, family, and health professionals to ensure a holistic approach.
  • Engage the young person in stimulating activities to ensure their emotional and mental well-being is being met.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with children who have a diagnosis of ASD, learning disabilities, and/or complex health needs.
  • Up to date DBS check.

Please note: A full valid UK driving licence and access to your own car is preferred. The role involves varied hours working the hours that best suit you and the family.

The successful recruitment is based on an Enhanced DBS Check, the cost of which is covered by Torfaen County Borough Council.

Qualifications / Experience:

Essential:

  • A knowledge and understanding of ASD/learning disabilities and/or complex health needs.
  • Have personal experience of caring for young people in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including clear concise records written or electronic.
  • Ability to provide meaningful support and encouragement to young people to enable them to meet their goals and outcomes.
  • To observe confidentiality.

Desirable:

  • QCF Level 2 or NVQ 2 in Social Care, or a willingness to complete.
  • Full Driving Licence & own transport.
  • An understanding of the principles of dignity, privacy, choice, independence, rights, and fulfilment.
