Independent Chair of the Orkney Public Protection Committee

Temporary - for 3 years from commencement

Self-Employed - please note the post holder will not be an employee of Orkney Islands Council

£400.00 per day (inclusive of travelling expenses)

Much of the role may be possible via remote working although the postholder may, at times, be required to attend Orkney.

The delivery of public protection arrangements in Orkney has been on a continuous improvement journey over the last five years with significant progress being recognised by recent joint inspection teams.

We have a strong, committed multi agency partnership which is passionate about promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all children and adults at risk of harm within Orkney.

With the pending retirement of the current postholder, the Chief Officers Group is now seeking to appoint a new independent chair for the Public Protection Committee. We require an experienced individual with significant knowledge and skill in public protection who has previously worked in a senior management role. An understanding of the policy and legislative framework for public protection is essential, as well as an understanding of the current national developments in adult, child and public protection. In addition, the successful applicant must possess the necessary strategic, professional and personal skills, vision and leadership to drive forward our ambitious quality assurance and improvement plans to protect and safeguard the wellbeing of children and adults at risk of harm and abuse.

The post holder will be responsible to the Chief Officers Group and work closely with the Chief Social Work Officer, and Chairs of sub-committees and their Lead Officers, and with members of the Public Protection Committee.

The role will be part time and is expected to involve a minimum commitment of 15 days per annum.

Notice of retirement from post should be 12 weeks to the Chief Executive of the Council.

The post-holder will operate in a self-employed capacity as an independent practitioner and will be appointed for 3 years. It would be expected that the post holder would arrange appropriate insurance.

The successful candidate will be required to hold a PVG membership statement for regulated work with adults and children which should be presented to Orkney Islands Council.
