Job summary

Sheffield City Council is seeking an Inclusion Officer (Young Carers Assessor) to work directly with children and young people with caring responsibilities. You will identify needs, undertake assessments and ensure the young person’s voice stays central in every decision.

You will collaborate with schools, health professionals, social care and voluntary partners to plan support, transitions and improved outcomes for Sheffield's remarkable young carers.

Inclusion officer (Young Carers Assessor) Temporary for 12 months (initially)

Across Sheffield, hundreds of young people provide care, support and emotional reassurance to family members every day. While many carry out this role with incredible resilience, caring responsibilities can impact their education, wellbeing, friendships and opportunities.

The Young Carers Assessment Team (YCAT) launched in November 2025, are looking for 4 compassionate, motivated and enthusiastic Inclusion officers (Young Carer Assessors) to join us as we grow and develop a dedicated service to ensure young carers are recognised, listened to and supported.

About the Role

As a Young Carer Assessor, you will work directly with children and young people who have caring responsibilities. You will identify their needs, strengths and aspirations, undertaking assessments that place the young person's voice at the centre of everything you do.

You will build trusted relationships with young carers and their families, helping them access the right support at the right time. Working closely with schools, health professionals, social care teams and voluntary sector partners, you will help to plan support for the cared for person, support for the young carer, support transitions, champion young carers, and help improve outcomes for some of Sheffield's most remarkable young people.

Essential Qualifications

• Minimum Level 3 NVQ/QCF in child care
• Minimum GCSE or equivalent at Grade C or above in English

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.

If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
