Job description

Are you an experienced behaviour mentor, pastoral specialist, or learning mentor looking to make a meaningful, lasting impact on young people?

An ambitious and supportive secondary school in Blackpool is seeking a dedicated and resilient Inclusion / Isolation Unit Manager (Internal Exclusion Room Lead). In this crucial pupil-facing role, you will lead the school's internal reflection facility, providing a calm, structured, and purposeful environment for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students who require time away from mainstream classrooms.

Rather than running a purely punitive space, the ideal candidate will champion restorative practices-ensuring students not only keep up with their academic work but also engage in meaningful behavioural reflection, de-escalation, and successful reintegration into the classroom.

Core Responsibilities
  • Supervision & Environment: Supervise the internal exclusion room / inclusion room daily, maintaining a silent, focused, and orderly learning atmosphere.

  • Curriculum Catch-Up: Liaise with classroom teachers and Heads of Department to collect, distribute, and ensure the completion of classwork and homework.

  • Behaviour Reflection & Intervention: Deliver structured, 1:1 and small-group restorative reflection exercises exploring triggers, decision-making, and emotional regulation.

  • Reintegration Support: Work closely with Heads of Year and the pastoral team to facilitate smooth, positive reintegration back into mainstream lessons.

  • Data & Tracking: Record daily attendance, student logs, behaviour points, and reflection outcomes accurately using the school's MIS platform (e.g., SIMS, Arbor, CPOMS).

  • Communication: Update parents, carers, and pastoral leads regarding student progress, incidents, and required follow-ups.

Essential Requirements & Skills
  • Experience with Young People: Proven track record working with secondary-aged pupils (11-16) displaying social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties (SEMH / challenging behaviour).

  • Calm & Authoritative Presence: Outstanding de-escalation skills, firm boundaries, and a fair, calm demeanor under pressure.

  • Restorative Focus: Understanding of restorative justice principles and trauma-informed approaches in an educational setting.

  • Strong Administrative Ability: Competence in logging sensitive pastoral notes, managing tracking spreadsheets, and navigating school information systems.

  • Education Background: Relevant Level 3 qualification (or equivalent experience in youth work, pastoral support, sports coaching, or police/military youth programs).

Compliance & Safer Recruitment
  • Right to work in the United Kingdom.

  • Enhanced DBS certificate registered on the DBS Update Service (or readiness to complete one immediately).

  • Complete 10-year employment/education reference history with no unexplained gaps.

  • Complete adherence to Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) statutory guidance.

What the School Offers
  • A tight-knit, proactive pastoral team and direct support from the Senior Leadership Team (Assistant Head for Behaviour & Attitudes).

  • Access to specialised professional development, including Team-Teach / MAPA de-escalation training, mental health first aid, and restorative justice workshops.

  • Dedicated on-site parking and accessible location close to major Blackpool transport routes.

  • Term-time-only schedule preserving all school holidays.
