One Year Fixed Term Contract (with potential for extension/permanent contract)

Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. We wish to appoint an Illustrator at either Assistant Supervisor or Supervisor level (dependant on experience), to join our team in the Cambridge office and assist in the production of graphics for grey literature reports. The position would suit someone with prior archaeological illustration experience, preferably on a range of project types and with demonstrable skills in relevant software applications. Although the post will primarily be focused on grey literature graphics, the successful applicant will also assist with other types of graphics work, potentially including finds illustration, display and publication.

Essential

Position Requirements

Familiarity with the processing and graphical representation of both hand-drawn and digital archaeological data, including plans, excavation sections, photographs and artefactual images using relevant software (such as GIS and Adobe Illustrator).

The proven ability to prepare archaeological illustration material that is clear and accurate.

A good knowledge and understanding of British archaeology and the principles, practices, procedures and processes relevant to investigations.

Ability to work independently when required, but also to operate as part of a team, with a flexible approach when working under pressure and to deadlines.

Good communication skills with fluent spoken and written English.

Ability to carry out work practices in accordance with health and safety requirements.

A degree in archaeology, archaeological science or related discipline will be highly advantageous, as will experience of professional archaeological fieldwork within the UK commercial environment.

Desirable

The ability to work confidently, with little supervision

Specialist skills in a particular sub-discipline of illustration (such as artefact illustration, photography).

Experience of producing graphics to publication standard.

The ability to assist with quality assurance processes to less experienced staff when required.

The ability to provide guidance to less experienced staff.

Applicants should be members, or eligible for membership, of the CIfA, preferably at the PCIfA level.
