Applications are open for this innovative post based within the Intensive Care Unit at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to spend their development time in a variety of ways. This fixed term post has arisen due to an unplanned gap within the clinical fellow rota.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a welcoming and forward-thinking department. The intention of the position is to increase the doctor’s experience of Critical Care patients prior to application to national recruitment processes. Opportunities will be provided to enhance the portfolios of the successful candidate thereby providing a competitive portfolio in future recruitment processes.

This post would be suitable for those who have completed an ACCS or Core training programme. Applications will also be accepted by those who have completed Foundation Training and who wish to explore a Critical Care career path.

Doctors within this role will be expected to participate in ward rounds, MDT meetings, and the ongoing care of the critically ill patient. The opportunity to be supervised in the assessment of patients in the Emergency Department and the hospital wards who require Critical Care input will also be available. If appointed, you will provide out of hours on-call commitments to the Critical Care Rota.

Out of hours and at weekends you will be one of two Residents providing cover for the Critical Care Units with a Senior Specialty Trainee from Anaesthesia or Intensive Care providing on site support and supervision. There is dedicated Critical Care Consultant cover 24hrs a day/7 days a week.

Education

The successful applicant will have a dedicated Clinical Supervisor and will be encouraged to keep a portfolio to document their Critical Care experience. The appointed candidate will have the opportunity to participate in audit, education and quality improvement projects within the department. Access to support for projects are available within the following areas of interest:

  • Quality improvement and research
  • Teaching
  • Mastery learning

The role of Clinical Development Fellow allows the successful applicant to spend 4 hours per week (1 day per fortnight or 2 half days) to perform dedicated development projects whether this be in education and teaching, research, quality improvement and there may be flexibility to support other areas of interest to a successful candidate.

Whilst this post does not have a study leave budget, we have previously been able to financially support educational activity and courses relevant to the post. The posts are not recognised for training. Applicants must hold Full GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practice.
