Overview

An exciting opportunity within the Digital team at South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for an experienced ICT Infrastructure Technician to support the implementation of a new Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. We are seeking a technically skilled, motivated and adaptable individual with strong infrastructure experience and excellent problem-solving, communication and organisational skills. The role focuses on supporting the deployment of critical infrastructure across multiple sites, working closely with a selected supplier and internal teams. The post holder will contribute to the Trust’s digital transformation journey and the delivery of the Fit for the Future Programme, ensuring the CAD system is resilient, secure, and aligned with operational and clinical priorities.

Responsibilities
  • Install, configure and maintain infrastructure components, including servers, switches, and virtual environments, across two data centres and three operational contact centres.
  • Ensure performance, security, scalability and resilience of the CAD infrastructure; support disaster recovery planning, data protection measures and system testing.
  • Act as a 3rd line technical expert, providing hands-on support for incident resolution, infrastructure monitoring and compliance with NHS Digital standards.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, support asset management processes and collaborate with the CAD Infrastructure & Integration Architect and wider IT teams to implement solutions with minimal disruption to business-as-usual services.
  • Support testing and validation activities including SAT, UAT, and disaster recovery procedures, while managing incidents and maintaining records.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and collaborate with internal and external teams to ensure successful implementation; technologies involved include VMware, Hyper-V, RAID, and failover/fallback systems.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience; formal training or experience in networks, hosting environments and virtualised platforms.
  • Advantageous: ITIL Foundation or higher, Microsoft or VMware certifications and vendor certifications such as CompTIA Network+.
Knowledge
  • Substantial ICT infrastructure support experience in large or healthcare organisations, with expertise in physical and virtual servers, Windows Server, VMware ESXi, and virtual host platforms.
  • Experience in service desk operations, server optimisation, disaster recovery and stakeholder engagement; advantageous experience with NHS systems or mission-critical platforms such as CAD.
Skills
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic abilities, excellent communication and a customer-focused approach.
  • Proficiency with ITSM tools, effective time management, and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Advantageous: supporting infrastructure test plans, mentoring junior staff, and delivering technical training or knowledge transfer sessions.
Benefits
  • Full training and a range of courses available locally.
  • Holiday entitlement of 27 days, rising to 29 days after 5 years’ service and 33 days after 10 years’ service, plus an additional 8 days bank holiday (pro rata for part time).
  • Automatic enrolment into the NHS Pension Scheme.
  • Access to continual professional development within SCAS and the wider NHS.
  • Occupational Health support and direct access to our Employee Assistance Programme and Health and Wellbeing Team.
  • NHS Discounts in over 200 stores.
  • Opportunity to join staff networking groups.

Successful applicants will have the choice to work from either Otterbourne, Milton Keynes or Bicester sites. This role is part of a high-priority programme with tight delivery timelines and complex interdependencies. The successful candidate will have substantial hands-on experience delivering infrastructure upgrades in large, multi-system environments with diverse stakeholders.

The role includes installation and configuration of servers, storage, network, and virtual infrastructure in line with CAD specifications, testing and validation activities, incident management, system monitoring and documentation. It requires asset management and adherence to NHS standards, with collaboration across internal and external teams to ensure successful implementation.
