Job role: IBM Power / Midrange Systems Engineer

Location: South West of England

Employment Type: Permanent

Chapman Tate Associates is working with a highly respected manufacturing business currently looking to expand their Infrastructure team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced IBM Power / Midrange Systems Engineer to join a technology-driven environment.

In this role, you will support and maintain Linux-based systems on IBM Power-VM and VMware ESXi platforms. You will contribute to infrastructure projects and provide expert support for critical systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, document, and maintain Linux servers and management platforms, ensuring compliance with standards and security policies.
  • Monitor and report on system capacity and performance.
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd line support for Linux and IBM Power platforms.
  • Lead and contribute to infrastructure projects, delivering solutions aligned with business needs.
  • Ensure platform availability and resolve service issues.
  • Implement best practices for Linux platforms regarding availability, security, and performance.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and partners.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Experience with Linux systems (RHEL, SLES) design, implementation, and support.
  • Experience with RedHat Satellite Server.
  • Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash, Korn).
  • Understanding of server performance analysis and optimization.
  • Experience with monitoring tools like Zabbix and Grafana.
  • Knowledge of automation tools such as Ansible and Terraform.
  • Familiarity with containerization and DevOps tools (Docker, Git, Kubernetes, Azure DevOps).
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and participate in out-of-hours support on a rota basis (37.5 hours/week).
  • Experience with IBM Power, AIX, VIO, NIM, CMC/HMC administration.
  • Designing and supporting high availability architectures.
  • Experience with cloud environments (Azure and/or AWS).
  • Experience with job scheduling tools like Redwood Cronacle/RunMyJobs.
  • Knowledge of project methodologies such as SAFe Agile, Prince II, or ITIL.
