A healthcare organization in Oxford is seeking an IBD Advanced Therapies Nurse (Specialist) to assess patient education needs and support treatment with biologics. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe medication administration and provide education to patients and their families. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, a nursing degree, and experience in managing biologic treatments.
Clinical Practice, Health Promotion, Protection and Prevention
Assess and address patient health education needs related to biological therapies. Use well-developed interpersonal skills to evaluate individuals' understanding of their clinical condition and future treatments, simplifying complex medical information with appropriate aids via face-to-face, telephone, email, and written communication. Demonstrate effective communication with patients, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team, utilizing sensitivity, empathy, and conflict management skills. Be aware of barriers to communication and understanding. Act as a patient advocate at all times.
Support inpatient outliers requiring biologic treatment on non-gastro wards. Apply specialized history-taking and assessment skills during treatments to ensure safe and appropriate medication use. Seek support from the multidisciplinary team, including gastroenterology consultants, pharmacy, and IBD ANPs, to support decision-making. Record and document treatments accurately, sharing information with other specialties and primary care. Attend virtual biologics clinics with specialists and participate in IBD MDT meetings, managing referrals and liaising with patients and team members.
Utilize digital resources such as the True-colours patient self-assessment tool in clinical practice, especially for non-biologic stable patient reviews.
Interventions and Treatment
Administer biologics on the Day Case Unit and train patients to self-administer subcutaneous medications. Ensure the safe use of specialist medications, including oral treatments, through timely assessments. Handle referrals from IBD clinics to counsel patients and organize pre-screening checks. Modify treatments as needed, consulting with specialists and the MDT. Develop links with community services to ensure continuity of care. Record and share documentation appropriately.
Leadership and Management
Act as a role model, demonstrating high standards of nursing expertise. Develop biologics and iron infusion services with the multidisciplinary team, aligning with guidelines and research. Educate staff on new biological agents and medications. Support external Vedolizumab nurses and liaise with pharmaceutical companies and charitable organizations. Be mindful of organizational goals and trust objectives in service management.
Education and Training
Maintain professional development within NMC guidelines and update practice with current evidence. Engage in peer networks and pursue regional and national learning opportunities. Attend mandatory training and e-learning.
Patient and Carer Education and Training
Provide education to patients, families, and carers, developing written materials and considering other communication methods. Empower patients for self-management and monitoring.
Development of Others
Offer clinical advice on biological medications, contribute to colleague development, and support nursing students. Educate staff in the Day Case Unit and infusion services. Act as a clinical advisor within the trust and externally, participating in professional organizations. Deliver presentations and contribute to research dissemination. Maintain departmental data and demonstrate IT skills. Support appraisal processes and promote diversity and equality.
