The role involves conducting hydrographic surveys across England and Wales, managing surveys, and providing technical support for waterway assets. Candidates should have a relevant degree and experience in hydrographic surveying. Offering a competitive salary of £36,250 – £38,875 and a range of employee benefits, including flexible working arrangements.
We're one of the UK's biggest charities and we care for 2,000 miles of canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs because we believe life is better by water. We manage museums, archives and a large collection of historic buildings, as well as the nature and wildlife that call our canals home. This enables us to provide wellbeing opportunities for millions of people each year.
We currently have an opportunity for a Hydrographic Surveyor to join our Asset Improvement team. This role covers all of England and Wales.
This Hydrographic Surveyor will be part of a small team responsible for collecting, processing, analysing, interpreting, and presenting spatial information on the waterway environment.
Administratively based from our Leeds or Newark hubs. Hybrid working with attendance at hub spaces as required for team working.
The role requires regular travel across the Trust's national network of reservoirs, canals and river navigations to carry out site surveys. Site work is usually Tuesday–Thursday. All site visits start at Tinsley Marina, Sheffield where the team's equipment, van and boats are stored. Travel patterns will be discussed at interview.
Travel: Regular travel (2–3 days a week) across the Trust's network. Approximately 30–35 overnights away from home per year may be required.
The Hydrographic Surveyor will assist the Senior Hydrographic Surveyor in planning and carrying out multibeam and single beam echosounder surveys of canals, rivers, reservoirs and docks. They will post-process acquired data to generate outputs for use in dredging, reservoir safety and engineering. The role works cross-functionally to develop and implement waterway asset management strategies and to provide technical advice to support the Trust's operation, maintenance, repair and renewal of waterway assets.
Whether you are building on a few years of industry experience or are a more experienced professional seeking a new challenge with flexibility, we seek a capable, motivated team player who enjoys working outdoors and travelling.
You will be required to drive the team's 4x4 vehicle and tow boat trailers to site. During surveys you will operate the team's echosounder and other survey equipment and manage our small survey vessels. Full training will be provided.
