Job description

This is a Permanent position and Coleman James Ltd are acting as an Employment Agency

We are seeking a skilled Marine Hydraulic Technician to support the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hydraulic systems on marine vessels, port equipment, and dredging machinery. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of hydraulic systems used in marine operations, offshore structures, and heavy-duty dredging equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hydraulic System Maintenance & Repair:

    • Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, and actuators.
    • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on hydraulic systems for vessels, cranes, winches, and dredging equipment.
    • Disassemble, inspect, and rebuild hydraulic components to OEM standards.
    • Identify and replace worn or damaged hoses, seals, and fittings.
  • Installation & Commissioning:

    • Install new hydraulic systems on marine vessels, port equipment, and offshore platforms.
    • Work with engineers to ensure proper alignment, calibration, and pressure testing of hydraulic components.
    • Assist in system commissioning and sea trials to verify performance.
  • Technical Diagnostics & Troubleshooting:

    • Use pressure gauges, flow meters, and diagnostic tools to assess system performance.
    • Interpret hydraulic schematics, technical drawings, and engineering diagrams.
    • Detect and resolve issues related to fluid leaks, pressure imbalances, and component failures.
  • Fluid Power Management & Safety Compliance:

    • Ensure proper selection, filtration, and maintenance of hydraulic fluids.
    • Monitor system contamination levels and implement fluid cleanliness programmes.
    • Adhere to marine industry safety regulations and best practices for hydraulic systems.
    • Conduct risk assessments and comply with environmental and safety protocols.
  • Documentation & Reporting:

    • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and parts usage.
    • Provide technical reports on hydraulic system performance and recommend improvements.
    • Work collaboratively with marine engineers, vessel crews, and maintenance teams.

Education & Certifications:

  • Diploma, NVQ, or Degree in Hydraulic Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification in Hydraulics (e.g., IFPS, Parker, Bosch Rexroth, or equivalent training) is desirable.

Work Experience:

3+ years of experience in hydraulic maintenance within the marine, offshore, or heavy equipment industry.

Hands-on experience with hydraulic power units (HPUs), hydraulic steering systems, deck machinery, and dredging equipment.

Strong understanding of marine hydraulic circuits, pressure testing, and component rebuilding.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in reading hydraulic schematics and troubleshooting fluid power systems.

Experience with hydraulic tools, pumps, accumulators, and filtration systems.

Ability to use diagnostic instruments such as pressure gauges, flow meters, and thermal sensors.

Familiarity with electro-hydraulic control systems and proportional valves is a plus.
