Job summary

Sellick Partnership is seeking a Planning & Highways Solicitor/Barrister to join a local authority legal team in Gloucestershire. You will provide high-quality, pragmatic legal advice across planning and highways and represent the council at tribunals, inquiries, and courts.

You will manage a broad caseload, advise planning committees and officers, draft agreements, and support planning policies. A qualified Solicitor or Barrister with substantial experience is required.

Qualifications

• Sound knowledge of local government law and practice.
• Proven experience managing a complex caseload independently.
• Strong analytical skills to assess high-risk issues.
• Professionalism to work with senior managers and elected members.
• Ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly to non-legal colleagues.
• Resilience to manage sensitive and contentious matters.

Responsibilities

• Advise on planning applications, enforcement and highways matters.
• Provide legal advice to planning committees, panels and officers.
• Advise elected members and officers on complex planning issues.
• Draft and negotiate a wide range of legal agreements.
• Support development of planning-related policies and documents.
• Prepare for public inquiries, review evidence and statements.
• Attend planning committee monthly and occasional court appearances.
• Advise on compulsory purchase orders and town/village green matters.
• Provide clear, timely and commercially aware legal advice.
