Job summary

The Shipowners' Club, via Waterborne, is seeking a Hull & Machinery Underwriter to join our growing team. You will underwrite Hull & Machinery and related marine business on behalf of Waterborne, providing cover that meets client needs while supporting growth.

You will work alongside P&I underwriters to deliver a one-stop marine insurance solution for clients and brokers. Ideal candidates will have proven Hull & Machinery underwriting experience, strong risk assessment, and a proactive mindset

Qualifications

• Hull & Machinery underwriting experience and understanding of policy forms and clauses.
• Knowledge of risk assessment factors and ability to analyse placements, slips and wording.
• Technical competence across Hull & Machinery and related marine covers.
• Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills for client/broker engagements.
• Knowledge of Lloyd’s and company markets, delegated authority and reinsurance.
• Experience using underwriting, pricing and CRM systems.
• Interest in how digital tools, AI, data, and automation can support underwriting.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite a profitable Hull & Machinery and related marine portfolio for Waterborne.
• Provide physical damage and related cover meeting client needs while growing the account.
• Collaborate with P&I underwriters to offer a combined marine insurance solution.
• Assess and price risk in line with guidelines and authority.
• Operate within delegated underwriting authority and referral processes.
• Deliver high-quality policy documentation to clients and brokers.
• Build and maintain relationships to retain and grow the portfolio.
• Identify and develop profitable new business opportunities.
• Monitor portfolio performance and address areas of concern.
• Ensure data is recorded accurately in systems.
• Share knowledge with Waterborne and Shipowners Group colleagues.
• Look for opportunities to automate underwriting and reporting tasks.
