Job summary

Advocates is seeking a Specialized Deaf Interpreter to act as a crucial liaison for Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and hard of hearing individuals within the Advocates community. The role supports communication access through ASL, tactile and visual modalities, and collaboration with ASL-English interpreters.

The Deaf Interpreter will translate English materials into ASL, advise on Deaf culture and accessibility, and work across the agency with staff and community partners.

Qualifications

• A.A. Degree required; B.A. or B.S. in related field preferred.
• RID certification preferred; non-certified candidates expected to pursue national certification under supervision.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect interpretation services for agency members using ASL, tactile languages, and other visual systems.
• Facilitate Deaf-led Open Process interpreting that addresses linguistic, cultural, and accessibility needs.
• Assess communication needs and adapt interpreting, captioning, and approaches for equitable access.
• Translate English-print materials into accessible ASL.
