Job description

Base Location: For this role, we require the successful applicant to be based from one of our Scottish locations – Aberdeen or Inverness.

Salary: £58,630 - £68,098 + car allowance + eligible for overtime + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing, and family.

The role

SSEN Transmission is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented HVDC Operations Engineer, focusing on Control Systems, to join our dynamic Asset Management & Operations (AM&O) team on a permanent basis. In this key role, you will contribute to the delivery, maintenance, and commissioning of all HVDC Converter Stations in service and those in the project execution phase. You will also support the execution of HVDC and FACTS Service Level Agreements for the AM&O team. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills in the energy sector while contributing to a forward-thinking team.

You will
  1. Lead the Operations team on works related to HVDC / FACTS Control Systems, including review and approval of software/code changes, testing on replica systems, and witnessing/support at site during deployment, ensuring strict revision control.
  2. Provide first-line support at sites for Converter faults and critical alarms related to Control & Protection Systems. Coordinate fault finding, troubleshooting, emergency repairs, and site verification activities, liaising with Technical Services teams as needed.
  3. Lead upgrade and refurbishment projects for HVDC / FACTS Control Systems, working closely with Transmission Operations and Engineering to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  4. Engage regularly with live HVDC Projects at Gate stages, attend design review meetings, and support Factory System Tests and Site Acceptance Tests for new systems.
  5. Collaborate with Technical Services and Operational Technology teams to ensure consistent inspection and maintenance practices across Transmission Operations related to Control Systems.
You have
  • Experience in design, Factory System Testing, and/or Site Acceptance Testing of HVDC / FACTS Control Systems. Experience with MACH2, MACH3, or SIMATIC systems is advantageous.
  • Experience in the operational and maintenance lifecycle of HVDC / FACTS assets.
  • Ability to deliver within challenging timescales, prioritize effectively, and organize work efficiently.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with team members, engineers, managers, procurement, and OEMs, along with excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • An applicable driver’s license due to project locations.
