Job description

HR Associate (Self-Employed)

“I’m looking for someone consistent, reliable and confident who can help me

keep current clients happy while I focus on growing”.

Location: Client visits & remote

Client Location: Stevenage, Herts.

Hours: 10 per month / split weekly to begin with and will most definitely increase

Rates: £64 per hour, invoiced monthly with a detailed timesheet as a self-employed entity

Reports To: Kate Gathard [Founder]

Elysian is a start-up with a very strong belief in being yourself [and a massive dislike of the dystopian ‘blocker’, non-commercial, employee-only focused reputation].

I’m about freedom, authenticity, and making businesses work better for owners and employees — no corporate nonsense allowed.

My end goal is a camper van for working in on long weekends/ flexible working for me and a base with a team.

Elysian is only 2.5 years old, but we’re already winning awards & changing the game.

What I’m Looking For:

Personality & Experience:

  • You’ve got client-facing experience (mandatory!). You’ll be pragmatic, detail-oriented, confident, and empathic. I need a calm, organised, steady hand that can juggle multiple HR client balls without dropping them, all while maintaining that magical balance between professionalism & personality.

Skills:

  • You’re someone who can get things done, make decisions, and offer solutions, all while being mindful of risks (low to high, RAG-style!). You’re not risk-averse, but you’re also smart about it. You’re methodical, time-driven, and responsive—clients come to us because we’re always on the ball.

Flexibility:

  • I’m in the middle of a strategic growth & development phase. This means you’ll need to be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in an environment where things might change. If that sounds scary, this isn’t the gig for you.

A good sense of humour:

  • I’m neurodiverse (which, let’s be real, comes with its challenges, like some quirky communication styles and forgetfulness). But I always prioritise responsiveness and client service. So, you’ll need to be able to deal with / adapt when things get a little chaotic. If you’ve got a sense of humour and patience with me, you’ll be just fine.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Client Interaction & Relationship Building:

  • Be the face of Elysian for our not-for-profit client directly and scope for other clients too. They’ll want to meet with you, and you’ll be representing my business, so think of it as "Elysian, but with your own awesome spin." You'll be doing site visits, guiding them through HR challenges, and keeping everything running smoothly.

HR Advice & Support:

  • You’ll be offering a blend of guidance, hand holding (the gentle kind), formal letters, coaching-type help for managers and general problem-solving for a client[s]. You’ll also be leading some formal meetings and making sure clients/managers/employees feel supported.

Business Administration:

  • A bit of HR admin, some work in Basecamp (our client filing system).
  • Keeping me on track with any new employment law updates (because, hello, brain fog). This might sound less exciting, but trust me, your contributions here will keep things running smoothly and efficiently.

What’s in it for You:

Flexibility: Work a few hours per day/per week to fit around your current clients [but ensuring you are responsive to their needs, work from your home in-between a client visit.

Flexibility is the name of the game here, so long as you’re responsive to clients, prioritise them and get the work done then we are all happy.

Who This Won’t Work For:

People who need constant supervision: I'm hands-off, but I expect results and autonomy.

People who don't understand an intrinsic need for client service to be a priority: No clients, no business. It is harder to win new clients than keep your existing/'firsts' happy. Customer service/client re-activeness is THE PRIORITY.

I've been burned: Unfortunately, a previous consultant didn't work out and clients were lost. I must have trust in you for: a) Advising/risks b) Confidentiality c) No sabotage-instincts d) Stealing clients [yep, I shouldn't have to say it]. Obviously tight paperwork and an NDA will be signed upon commencement.

How to Apply:

If you think you can keep up with my passion, pace, and occasional brain fog, send me an email and let’s get on a video call.

P.S. The right person will be a little quirky, flexible, and willing to roll with my lovable ridiculousness.
