Job description

A specialist civil engineering contractor has an opportunity for an HSEQ Manager to join their team in Sussex. The company delivers works within the water and coastal defence sectors, and their current portfolio of projects includes deep drainage, reinforced concrete structures, river defence, and water treatment plant schemes.


The HSEQ Manager will support a number of projects to meet the requirements of the Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality Management systems and champion HSEQ initiatives in the region while ensuring that legislation is adhered to.


The Role

Reporting to the company Director, the HSEQ Manager will be responsible for:

  1. Carrying out detailed site inspections by recognizing hazards and seeking to minimize risks while creating, maintaining, and improving health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  2. Promoting the value of occupational health.
  3. Providing consistent and accurate HSEQ advice to site teams.
  4. Carrying out toolbox talks.
  5. Ensuring that site supervisors are following protocol.
  6. Forming collaborative relationships with Client HSEQ Management.
  7. Supporting and completing investigation reviews for HSE investigations.
  8. Monitoring HSEQ Advisor inspections and ensuring findings are closed out in a timely manner.
  9. Agreeing on monthly inspection targets and monitoring compliance.

Experience Required
  1. NEBOSH general certificate or equivalent.
  2. CSCS Safety Professional card.
  3. Extensive HSEQ experience within a civil engineering environment; experience in the water sector would be beneficial.
  4. A sound knowledge of deep drainage and water-related experience is desirable.
  5. Sound knowledge of quality controls associated with company work activities.
  6. Analytical skills to interpret detailed information and regulations.
  7. High standard of written English.
  8. Good communication skills.
  9. People skills – ability to liaise with staff/operatives of all levels and communicate with other stakeholders.
  10. Excellent use of MS Office – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  11. Strong presentation and report writing skills.
