  • Lead investigations into accidents, injuries, dangerous occurrences and near-misses, completing root‑cause analysis and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Manage and maintain the staff Training Matrix, ensuring employees hold the correct qualifications, certifications, inductions and competencies for their roles.
  • Deliver safety inductions, toolbox talks, refresher training and competency assessments for factory, assembly and field‑based personnel.
  • Monitor and report HSE performance through leading and lagging indicators, identifying trends and driving continuous improvement.
  • Provide practical support around machinery safety and maintenance activities, using your mechanical engineering knowledge where required.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for external regulatory bodies, including the Health and Safety Executive.
About You
  • NEBOSH National Diploma, Level 6 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent qualification.
  • GradIOSH or Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) is preferred.
  • At least five years’ senior HSE management experience in heavy engineering, steel fabrication or heavy industrial manufacturing.
  • Previous practical, hands‑on experience as a Mechanical Engineer, with the confidence to support maintenance activities if required.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK machinery safety legislation, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, environmental permitting and relevant ISO standards.
  • Proven experience creating and reviewing Risk Assessments, Method Statements and safe systems of work.
  • Experience managing training records, competency frameworks and staff Training Matrices.
  • A visible, practical leadership style, with the ability to influence shop‑floor teams, field engineers, senior managers and directors.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience using HSE data and KPIs to identify risks and improve performance.
