Join the British Army as an HR Officer – Detachment Commander, taking on significant responsibilities from day one. As a HR Officer – Detachment Commander, you are given significant responsibility from day 1. You'll command, lead and manage 18 highly motivated and bright soldiers in the delivery of personnel administration. Joining our Staff and Personnel Support (SPS) Branch, you’ll deliver personnel administrative capability in support of the wider Army. You’ll look after the physical and professional development of your detachment and assist senior leadership on personnel and security matters. No two days are the same, and you’ll deploy around the world.
Your training will be affiliated with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) and you’ll have lots of opportunities to build professional qualifications and accreditation, such as a degree in HR Management or Business.

As an entry-level Officer, you’ll start your career in a position of management, commanding responsibility for your team of soldiers. You don’t need any experience to apply – through world-class training at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, you’ll develop the transferrable leadership skills and qualifications you need to motivate and support your team.
Outside the Royal Military Academy, you’ll continue to learn and grow. Being an Officer is a global adventure, whether you’re leading expeditions, running operations abroad, or delivering humanitarian aid to communities in need.
During your training at Sandhurst, you’ll be an Officer Cadet, earning £33,183 a year. As you progress through our ranks, this will rise to £50,540 for a Captain, and £63,387 when you become a Major.
You’ll also receive 38 days’ annual leave every year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, cheaper living costs, and free gym and sports facilities. And unless you're away on operations or training exercises, you'll normally work 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
To qualify, you must be between 17 years 9 months and 29 years and 11 months. You’ll also need to pass a basic fitness test.

It all starts at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. You’ll learn the skills you need to become an Officer – from weapons handling to outdoor survival – to what it takes to lead your team in a range of hostile situations, anywhere in the world.
Once you’ve commissioned, you’ll take charge of 30 soldiers. Then, you’ll begin the specialist training you need to be an expert in your chosen field, whether that’s engineering, intelligence gathering, or piloting an Apache helicopter. You’ll also take part in Adventurous Training around the world, from skiing in the Alps to white-water rafting in Colorado. All while you’re earning a starting salary of £33,183 during training, then £39,671 after training is complete.
