Job description

HR Administrator

Shrewsbury

Permanent

Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm

£26,000 per annum

Our client based in a rural location on the West side of Shrewsbury is recruiting for a capable administrator to join the team ASAP to support the onboarding and compliance process for new starters. You will be a key player in the HR and compliance team, handling everything from pre-employment checks to document verification. You will be highly organised, detail-driven and confident in communication. The client will consider this position as a temp-to-perm or permanent role.

Administrator Duties

  1. Receive and process new hire information following offer acceptance from the Recruitment Coordinator.
  2. Review candidate CVs, application forms, and identification documents to begin the onboarding file.
  3. Initiate and track DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) applications.
  4. Identify and obtain necessary references, including most recent, previous, character references - potentially going back up to 20 years for certain roles.
  5. Chase references via email and phone and verify all written references verbally.
  6. Investigate and confirm employment from companies that have ceased trading (e.g., using Companies House).
  7. Request and verify copies of relevant qualifications; liaise with universities or institutions where needed.
  8. Arrange and obtain overseas police checks for candidates who have lived or worked abroad.
  9. Maintain a detailed onboarding tracker using Microsoft Excel and other internal systems.
  10. Meet with new starters during their induction week to finalise missing documents and ensure full compliance, using a firm and professional approach.

Skills and Experience required:

  1. Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
  2. Confident communicator - both written and verbal.
  3. Able to remain calm but assertive when chasing outstanding information.
  4. Comfortable managing multiple onboarding cases simultaneously.
  5. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and general administrative tools.
  6. Experience in compliance or HR administration is desirable but not essential.
